Latest update .. :(

Run out of light so had to stop, also it rained all over the printouts so had to reprint them in order to follow instructions ...  may I offer the following ideas for amendment to the howto ???  :)

1. How the ***** do you "remove the cable tray" ... never managed it .. but eventually got the cover back on ... TWICE  .. see note 2 .. :(

2. Suggest that "replace oil filler spout as soon as possible" be added to instructions. This will stop a dropped screw emulating the "Dam  Busters" and dissapearing exactly dead centre down the orofice .. thus requiring the whole damned cover to be removed again just to rescue said screw. And of course it is on the "difficult" side of the engine .. see note 1  ....

As to where we are .... 5 out of 6 plugholes had oil in them, 2 were small amounts (1/4 inch on plug cover) the three on the passenger side were swimming, front two couldn't even see the top of the plug.

The old gaskets were not Vx IMHO.. much thinner than the new ones, and the person who fitted them had spread sealant all along them as well, not just on the bends. I have a feeling that when I paid for them to be done last year they may have just been sealed and not replaced ... words will be said to garage .. but proving it will be hard. O-rings were totally hard and shattered on removal.. so they were pretty old as well

All cleaned up and gaskets done, can't replace the leads as no where open .. am going to suck it and see.

Breather box and pipes cleaned .. no where near as much crud as I expected, certainly not blocked.

Tomorrow will be a plenum/throttle body clean then refit and see what happens ...

Marks DTM - battery fine .. turns over a treat, it is only the tacho that jumps and only on initial turnover.

JamesV6 - All fuses in both compartments by the battery area have been checked with a multimeter, I haven't checked those in the footwell yet.

Anyone .... opinion on this theory/hope (prayer??)... as the ignition is "wasted spark" ie sparks to a pair of plugs even though only 1 is on compression stroke .... would the oil be sufficient to "short" the HT such that no spark actually gets to the plug ?? electricity taking the path of least resistance. This might explain the lack of spark I got and the fact that there are no EML warnings ??  or am I clutching at straws ??

Anyway .. tomorrow will tell .....  I wonder what time the stealers open .. if they do .. :(

Next question .... Plenum .. right at the back centre is a "device" which has a vacuum actuator attached, goes to electrical connector back right of plenum. The bit that has the electical connection has a "U" shaped air pipe to the vaccuum actuator. The connection of this U pipe to the electrical actuator is buggered and looks like it has been araldited ... trying to read the part no it looks like 90166241 ... what is the correct name for this bit please ... stealers are open this afternoon and I want to get one of these and a crank sensor.

Daft Q .. would this broken vac pipe cause the non-starting problem .. ? don't see it myself .. :(

Sounds like the solenoid valve for the rear multiram. Might be worth getting one off a breaker as I imagine it'll be expensive from the stealers. I can't see it causing starting problems but it'll introduce an air leak which won't be helping matters.

I think the crank sensor connector (and the multiway connector that drives the injectors) are normally clipped together and they fit on that metal bracket in the foreground so if that's the case the crank sensor connector is the smaller of the two (3 pin).

Super job ..  the injector plug and that small one DO go on that bracket .. so I'l go with you on this one. thanks for that ... makes sense at last  :)

When SWMBO gets back from the sales guess I'm off to the stealers  just need to work out which one of the two types I have from the howto ..

many thanks  :)

Saga continues ... mixed news...  :(

1. Got new bits from stealers .. but can't fit the crank sensor, there is a "protusion" on the oil filter housing that gets in the way, all I can do is move the old sensor out 1/4" and the end hits this casting, I don't have the room with these axle stands - I'm working at arms stretch already - to get inside the filter housing to release the bolt and rotate the housing the 1" it needs.

2. Having got stopped there I decided to put everything back together, all nice and clean, and see what happens .......

She fired up virtually instantly, I let the fuel line pressurise, she turned over 3 times and away she went  :y :y

3. Bit tappety which I put down to hydraulic lifters being empty so let her run whilst listening for air leaks and anything else ........ :'(

Passenger side rocker gasket bottom edge started to drip after 3 minutes ... 1 drip every 3 seconds... :(

So it needs to come off again, I've got as far as the plenum off before it got dark, so we try again in the morning ... :(

What I do need PLEASE is advice on how to remove that damned cable tray which just gets in the way, and is probably the reason the gasket is not seated properly, as I fought my way around it I probably dislodged the gasket. I cannot for the life of me open it, undo it anything.. it is just a solid mass getting in the way....  any ideas very gratefully taken.

Pressure is now off slightly as a mate has offered the use of a Discovery so we can go away for the New Year as planned, but I'd rather get this thing sorted tomorrow morning if I can.

So .. any one any ideas on the cable tray please ... pretty please ... pretty please with sprinkles ??  :)

If you unscrew the cable tray mountings you should be able to remove the lid of the tray, remove all the wiring from it and take the cable tray away leaving the wiring in place, which you can just clip out of the way, or unplug from all devices and drape over the scuttle.

The crank sensor wire is the part that fails so I guess that moving it around has (temporarily) effected a cure. It'll be back though. Sounds like you need to loosen off the oil filter mounting. :(
