My bonnet release catch won't catch....
« on: 27 December 2007, 16:10:43 »

Hello  ,

On my '98 CDX diesel estate I was going to open the bonnet and do a few checks before visitng the out-laws tomorrow, i.e oil  water etc , but when I tryed to use the bonnet release catch , it won't release the bonnet , it just makes a slight clicking noise. there appears to be tension on the catch as it is farily stiff to move ( so the cable is still connected ? ) , it's like I cannot bring the release catch far enough back . Almost as it the cable as streached .
Has this happened to anyone before ? , if I pop into the local garage does anyone know if it will be simple fix or something more expensive ? . Would the not so local dealer be a better bet ?
Thanks
Mike

someone will explain how to tighten, but to open:

get a mate to push down on the front of the bonnet as you pull the catch, it should open.

Try getting someone to push down on the front edge of the bonnet while you pull the release. You could then try adjusting the rubber stops on either side of the front slam panel so that there's less pressure on the latch itself. The latch is adjustable but be careful how far you adjust it as it's very easy to get way off the mark.
If you also remove the centre black plastic panal that covers the salm panel you'll see a clamp for the bonnet release cable, it's possible that the clamp has slipped on the outer sleeve so that there isn't as much cable available to opperate the bonnet release.

EDIT .... must type faster!  ;D

Had the same problem on mine.
Takes a bit of time to get it right But its a quick fix.

tighten the cable as andy b said. Then give the spring a half turn at a time, so the bonnet "pops" up, but don't go mad with the spring

Then adjust the rubber stoppers until the bonnet sits correctly. Too much & the bonnet won't close.

I'd suggest adjusting the rubber stops until the bonnet sits at the right height first, & then alter the tension on the spring of the catch. Be aware that when you slacken the catch that it's capable of moving about 3/16" (5mm) in each direction so make sure that it'' still go down into the hole on the slam panel.

Wow ,

2 replies within 10 minutes , thank you . I'll do as suggested when I get 5 minutes and it's light out.
Thanks again
