The local garage in Turriff has just charged me £450 pounds to change the crankshaft position sensor along with the timing belt.  I can't helt but think that this is excessive . . anyone else agree with me?

if it's a v6 i reckon that's about right.

Thanks for the welcome!  The It's a standard 2.0 GLS 4 cylinder - I nearly fainted when they called me this morning - the missus went up the wall!

Its around 100 pounds for a cambelt KIT and Water Pump and 35 pounds for a crank sensor.

So I think you have been had.

You did get the water pump changed also didn't you ?

It is expensive but if its a main dealer price, I wouldn't be suprised. If it was a back street garage thats way too much. As Craig said above its best to get the water pump changed at the same time and make sure the tensioners have been changed and not just the belt.

labour times are:

Cambelt/Tensioners: 1.4 hours (inlcudes water pump)
Crank sensor: 0.7 hours

Cambelt kit: 86+Vat retail
Crank sensor: 30+vat reatil (there is a very early one at 53+Vat retail)

So:

Materials: £136.30 (not including water pump, antifreeze or more expensive sensor)
Leaving labour charge to be £313.70....which works out at 149 quid an hour....

So, not great by any means and worth challenging..........get a breakdown and post it up.
