Price of ew discs and pads
« on: 10 January 2008, 18:49:30 »

Hi,

I have just bought a t reg mv6 and wanted to get new brake pads and discs at the front (the rear are fine).  I went to kwik fit and was told it would be around £64 for pads and £133 for discs.  Does this sound reasonable?

Many thanks,

Dino

The cost of original set of Vauxhall front discs and pads is around £80 altogether if using Vauxhall TradeCard. Labour should be 1-2 hours so £50-£100 in average garage hourly rate.

Also, you are likely to new pad wear sensors and these are around a Tenner each.

And ever so easy to do yourself ;)

My experience of pattern discs is they are worthless, stick to genuine.

As 'TheBoy' says. ;) Where do you live? There's probably someone nearby who would be able to buy them Trade Club price for  you if required.

My concern would be whether they were using genuine parts or not.
It is a straightforward job DIY apart from the PIA wear sensors which are fiddly.

Hi,

I just thought that i would post this as i have had the work completed now by kwik fit at a price of £198.  This includes life time replacement pads, new sensors and 12months warrenty on discs.  I got a quote from vx and it was £236 with out sensors.  Although i do not really like kwik fit they did do a great job, have stopped the slight wobble at speed and were damn good guys.  I appreciate that the job was doable myself but as i only just bought it and just needed it doing as i do not have the time so it was a good compromise.  Thought i'd let you know the outcome in case anyone else is in a similar position.

Thanks for the advice,

Dino

i paid about £30 for a pair of sensors and £25 for front pads from Vx three years ago. didnt even know TC existed then!

18months later that omega then needed new discs (front and rear) and so more new pads and sensors ("cos they break when takin em off")!! Grr >:( that was december 05 and i wrote the car off last march. talk bout not gettin moneys worth!

in my experience it looks like paying the least is best as something else will go wrong and you throw it all away anyway. :(
however, experience also showed i should've forked out an extra 60%  for Vauxhall to do the work as the car never drove the same since! mind you that was because of wishbones as well as brakes!  :-/

think mot time this year will involve more brake work - has anyone else bought better than Vx's own? (like Kwik Fit/ green stuff/black stuff etc etc)

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!
