Any ideas on this one?.......
« on: 02 February 2008, 21:51:11 »

My 2.2 has developed an odd noise.......that i think is engine related  :-/

Sitting idling..you can feel a slight vibration thro the steering wheel...which it didnt have.
It idles at about 600rpm....which is a tad low.....i think its target idle is 700rpm....and pretty sure it used to idle at 700rpm.

Giving it gentle revs in N or P.......its seems to slightly vibrate and be noisey at around 1500rpm.

Possibly the best way to descibe the vibration...is it is possibly the sort of vibration you get on V6 when its missing on one cylinder (i carnt say a 4pot missing on one.......coz its not that bad)

Driving it you dont really notice the vibration.......but if it goes to about 3k revs you can hear a odd noise/whine...tho not loud that disapears as soon as it changes gear.

I thought it might be a bearing going but if had bearings go noisey before and never got vibration  :-/

Doesnt seem to be getting worse quickly....as ive done 350 miles in it today....and its not got any worse.

Oh and its the same on petrol......so not lpg related.

Any ideas anyone  :-/

Edit.......

Should mention in case its anything to do with the prob......

Since last oil change....(7k  :-[ ) its used 2L litres of oil .....twice as much as it used to.
And im chucking in 1L of coolant a week.........tho not sure if its still leaking it.......it has a history of leaking....but if it is.....im lost as to where  :-/

I don't know the 4 pot .. but could it be something on the auxilary belt with a bearing problem ?? I've had similar in the past on older engines ...

Tensioner/waterpump/alternator ??

:(

but the oil usage would worry me ...... :(

Thats what im thinking sorta........tho not the waterpump......coz thats driven by the cambelt on the 4 pots......

Tho not sure why its idling slower that it should........

Can a TECH2 expert enlighten me?

From how i see it.........and i think ive seen this on a TECH2 before.....target idle for my 2.2......is 700rpm.....so if its idling lower than than......why doesnt the ECU compensate and speed it up?  :-/

Cam sensor........no.....i know what the symptons are for that  :y

Its not missing........so water in plugs/coil pack i dont think so.

Getting near 120k now.........

Does the speed stay constant when the air con is turned on or the steering turned to one of the stops?

Should have the whole range of the DBW throttle available to maintain idle speed - unless there is a limit in firmware. Might be worth cleaning the throttle body just in case. Otherwise, I'd say the ECU is happy with the idle speed.

Any codes stored?

Aircon.......it grunts a tad then recovers the idle speed when turned on.......

Throttle body.....ive cleaned this out......well quite a few k miles ago  :-/
Codes.......i'll check........it did put on the EML the other morning.........but it had just switched to LPG and was meega cold out and was missing as it normally does when it first switches  and its about 0c outside temp

Dave, you've got snapped exhaust manifold studs, so the head needs to come off anyway to sort this.

So in the process, we should remove all the valves, and change the stem seals. This may help sort out your oil usage.

And while it's all off, investigate the coolant leak.

Any bank hols coming up soon? We should do it easy over a 3 day weekend, including talking nicely to our friend sassanach for some help getting that stud out :)

Thanks James  :y........tho i think next BH is Easter.....March sometime?  :-/

It did cross my mind HG......for the oil/water consumption  :-/
Would a compression test be worthwhile?

I think i need to get a listening stick on it to see if i can pinpoint the noise.........

I think I have a stem seal problem on my 2.6l which shows as a brief burn off of oil on starting but only after a prolonged rest. There isn't a drastic effect on oil consumption and Marks DTM pointed out that different pressures in crankcase compared to cam chamber would prevent large amounts of oil being burned by getting past the stem seals during normal running, so this may not account for the amount being consumed. Is there any evidence of oil getting past the piston rings?
