2.2 DTi general advice please.
« on: 07 October 2007, 11:31:10 »

Well its been almost a year since i sold my 2.5V6 Estate and left the forum.

I have been running a little 1.6 Scenic in its place and it has been great but now i have bought a caravan and need a nice big heavy car again.

I am thinking of a facelift Manual 2.2 DTi Estate as i want carrying capacity as well as reasonable economy.

Questions.

Does this engine have a chain driven cam or is there a traditional cambelt ?( hope its a chain )

Generally what are they like once the mileage is well over 100k in terms of reliability?

What tends to go wrong with these engines (if anything )

How economical are they and will it have enough grunt to handle a normal size 2 berth caravan comfortably?

Has anyone chipped one of these 2.2's and if so how much better was it?

Anything else i need to watch out for?

My Last Omega a 99T reg auto Estate was a great car and i had it well sorted. I know that it would eat the caravan but i DEFINITELY want a Diesel.

Many thanks Darryl :)

There are a couple of DTi threads in GenChat at the moment.  Moved this there too as you will probably get a better answer....

Yes they are chain  :)
Mine has just covered 100k and I have been having starting problems, still not resolved  :-/
Engines tend to be very good, no major problems, remember it is worth changing the oil at least every 10k.
I average 42 mpg (80% motorway 70/80 and 20% town 20/40) loads of grunt for you caravan.
Not had my chipped (yet). Just wish I could resolve the starting problem, looks like I have knacked the starter this morning. :'( But need to confirm later, it has been doing a lot of crancking lately.)

Over all i am very pleased, but this issue with starting in making me  >:(

I have remapped a 2.0 DTI Vectra, and it flew and gave good gains in economy.

we currently have the remapping on special offer at the moment :)

^^^^^^
Absolutely! Power increase to 146bhp I do believe. Speed wise, it's quite fast enough and if you fit cruise you shouldn't really notice the caravan on the back. Hills shouldn't be an issue.

Mechanically, yes they are chain driven. After nearly 130k our CD spec has not had one single suspension component replaced, no wear reported on MOT, yes, it STILL drives tight as a drum! Even after covering more than half of that with a box van trailer.

They are noisy from startup, not the most refined diesel engine, but after 20-30mins driving they settle down a treat, not too noisy on the inside of the car though as it is well soundproofed and has a reasonable radio  :)

Sure you know they are all manual gearboxes on the DTi. Economy wise, if you drive like a saint you could see 48mpg. Real world figure, 43/45mpg for us. 30-32mpg with a trailer on. Torque figure is the same as the 3.2 V6 omega, nice and smooth right through the rev range and should soar easily to 100mph (officer  ;))

Ours has only been recovered once by AA, clutch slave cylinder - from reversing trailer uphill. DOH!  :-[ Other than that, nothing mechanically has been replaced, apart from exhaust. Ours has oil changed about every 10k also and is flushed with forte, which really improves economy.

Best of luck. Hardest part now is finding one with a low mileage  :y

Alan, you have had all glowplugs checked?

Ours has oil changed about every 10k
I would be inclined to half that if possible. Diesels are hard on their oil.

great towing car i pull a bailey 440 with 4 bikes on and you have to keep an eye on the speedo as it will easily excede towing limits (one of the reasons for fitting cruise)28-30mpg towing fully loaded cant be bad :y

I hope there's no jealously there TB! Uses fully synthetic and 10k is only about 5-6 months for us so seems to be happy enough.
