Changing thermostat advice

I'm planning to change my thermostat since the seal is leaking as shown here

Anyway I have the new parts as follows

- Thermostat
- 3 new bolts (2 for the thermostat and 1 for the pipe)
- 2 pipe seals
- 1 thermostat seal

I also have black sealant that I used for my rocker covers. Is it a good idea to use the black sealent along with the new thermostat seal, or just rely on the thermostat seal itself?

What sort of stat seal is fitted, is it the one of a complex profile with like rridges on it?

If it is it should seal pretty well and cause no further problems, if its the naff earlier design they just end up like a flat amorphous mes and leak...

As a tip, move the power steering bottle (for improved access) and get the 'Bstard bolt' out first then rotate the bridge pipe a few times until it pops out of the stat housing before even thinking about un-bolting the stat.

Hi mark, i guess I got the crappy seal since its pritty basic and sits inside the groove in the stat housing. So what should I do?

Hi,
Three small "dabs" of sealant are usefull to keep the seal in its groove while you fit the thermostat.

Also, compare the thickness of the thermostat flange on your old and new stat. If it is thinner, make sure that the new bolts are correspondingly that much shorter.  The rear fixing in the cyl block is a tapped blind hole, make sure you get any water out of the hole before you screw the bolt in.

Don't tighten the thermostat down hard until you have fitted the transfer pipe back in and fitted it's fixing bolt.

Here is a pic of what the 'complex' seal looks like



A dab of sealent on the bolt threads will help to as one of teh bolt holes goes into the water ways.

Also make sure you have the correct length bolts as there are two types of stat bodies with different thickness flanges (normaly the ones fitted at the factory have the thin flange)
