Door window trim rust!
« on: 21 February 2008, 13:43:02 »

HI all,

A mate had a shufty round the old meega recently and his verdict was "ok, but you want to have a look at the top of the doors before long son!" He was reffering to the window rubbery trims atop the doors, you can see some lifting which I guess is caused by rust under the rubber. My questions are, do the trims prize up easily and is there a recommended way of dealing with any rust apart from the obvious? I seem to have seen this problem before on Omegas and as mine's a '95 I guess it's got an excuse! Thanks for any advice.

Hi Humpy.

Your issues seem to be fairly similar with most,if not all, prefacelift megas.Have had 2 previous cars and both have shown signs of rust under window trims and agian not just front or back but nearside and offside,so assume it is not really weather related.
Sure I have read somewher that it is caused by a reaction from the internal coating of the panel...seems it rusts from "inside out "if that makes sense.Unsure if there is a permenant solution ,but if looks bad a decent body shop will be able to remove trim/repair/repaint and then I suppose it would be wise to give lots of wax treatment whne cleaning.
Think like most of us it is just a sign of "old age"

Yes common problem, I was advised not to pull out the Rubbers as they dont come off easly and are a pig to put back, could be the beer talking from the bloke?, but its put me off doing anything untill a nice rainy day.
