2.2DTI poor fuel consumption`
« on: 01 March 2008, 17:34:08 »

Hi all,

I have just picked up a 2001 2.2 DTI CDX Omega.  I noticed on the drive home that my MPG is showing up at around 37MPG whereas my old Elite used to get me closer to 44MPG.  Any ideas what I should be checking for this?

I also feel that it is very slightly down on power, but I have had it looked at in a Vauxhall garage and they have told me nothing is wrong with it. I am not convinced that all is well and feel the problem may be indicated by the low MPG.

Any ideas appreciated!!

Thanks,
Richard

presuming your old Elite was the 2.5 Diesel.

It will feel down on power, the BMW was a 6 pot, the 2.2DTi's are 4.

mpg sounds about right!

I would love to get 37mpg, my average is 30.
That's for short journeys, i get over 40 on longer journeys.
Is that what your getting on short journeys? if so about ok.

Thats got nowt to do with it.....the later 2.2 diesel actualy has more torque than the straight 6

I would start with a good service including diesel filter etc...

The DTi, has less horses and is slower.. so thats why i suspect it feels slower.

My last car had the same engine (2.2DTi) so that's whay I am comparing it to.  I will give it some more time and some more driving to see if it settles down.  I will see if a good service helps any as well.  Thanks for the advice!

Forget horses, think torque!
These are big heavy cars and torque is king!

When you've serviced it fill it with fuel and put a bottle of injector cleaner in it as well that will clean the system out also use branded fuel i:e Shell,BP  not supermarket stuff.

If someone else has been driving it, and crucially, driving it around town it WILL be as low as 37mpg. It's only really motorway miles that get it back up to 44mpg and perhaps as high as 48mpg.

Or on second thoughts, perhaps you have reset the computer and it does just need a service and perhaps fault codes read as suggested above? The only thing that's ever gone wrong with ours is EGR sensor (i think?).

Thanks for the support for us small fish Markie!  ;D

What is the torque figure for the DTi in ft lbs :question
It tells me in my owners manual, but it's in Nm which is about as useful as a chocolate fireplace.
Does anyone know how to convert one to another :question
Thanks. Pete

There's one surefire way of checking this.
Fill the tank to the brim, run it around as normal for a few days, (after zeroing the odometer!), and then refill - it really is the best method!
I had the same thing with my old Carlton 2.0 CDX, but using this method I was pleasantly surprised to get 27mpg towing a 22' caravan on cross-country routes.
Try not to use supermarket fuel - use the proper branded juice.

I used Total Excelium diesel in mine.
It claimed at the time if you didn't get extra mpg after using it they would refund your money (well the difference in price between their ordinary stuff)
My TD run really rough on the stuff and I did give it a chance by really filling up completely from more or less empty twice, it also returned around 3 mpg less per gallon than the ordinary cheap supermarket stuff.
Apparently it's best in more modern refined diesels, not the old TD BMW lump.
So I run mine on ASDA stuff and it likes that, just give it a blast down the duel carraigeway from time to time with some injector cleaner in (Redex) as I do mainly short journeys most of the week.

Could be the fuel computer is inaccurate, so worth doing a manual check.

Also, a good service with fuel filter and more importantly, air filter...
