DIFF. just a few ?'s
« on: 02 March 2008, 15:06:05 »

While looking under the car yesterday i noticed that there was a build up of yuck on the bottom of the diff. looks like road dirt mixed with old oil. (it looked really old and was very gritty to touch this is why i beleive it to be mainly road dirt which has stuck to a small residue of oil.)  the weather has been really bad to over the pass few weeks.

so i have cleaned it off and will monitor it see if it reappears. There has been no signs on the road of any fluid leaks under my car.

1. How often are you meant to do a level check?
2. How do you do a level check?
3. What fluid am i ment to be putting in it?
4. Do diffs fail? if so how would i know if it is? (dont beleive mine is just askin)
5. do you need to replace seals at any point in its life?

cheers fellas

1) Every couple of tears
2) There is a level plug on the drivers side of the diff (see pic in oil chaneg guide)
3) 90 grade hypoid
4) Generaly only if somebody has made a dogs arse of changing the pinion seal!
5) The pinion seals seem to start to weep around the 100K mark.

When you check the level you might well find that oil flows out due to the oil de-grading (the volume increases as the long chain molecules get choped up).

Also, the seals can weap after a lot of long hard driving, nothing to much to worry about unless it gets bad. Note, the pinion seal is the most liekly to let go and even then its not a huge leak.

Thankyou mark you have put my mind at rest. Checking the level is something that i will have to do.......but its going to have to wait a while i am afraid.

it is weeping then slightly thought it might have somethign to do with age.

thanks again.

Ow yes, hypoid is the sort of smell that can only be got rid of by burning your clothes so best not to wear to many  ;D

On a serious note, if its only a small sign of a weap then the fluid level wont have dropped by any significant amount.

If its like the one on my V plate where it was buggered, the whole under side of the car gets covered and the level is pretty close to zero!

As a long haired one who has had a pint of hypoid (from a Singer Vogue) squirted over my head, I can confirm that the smell is awful!

Best get some Fairy Liquid in  ;D
