Shocks - Options?
« on: 09 March 2008, 15:02:41 »

Hi all,  I've got a banging noise from my rear passenger side wheel and I'm fairly convinced it's the shock.  I've not had the wheel off (was about to when the heavens opened) but I've had a quick feel of things back there and got a hand covered in some fairly dark brown fluid that must be leaking from somewhere.

I've got an Elite, and originally self-levelling suspension.  That was disabled a while ago and perhaps now would be a good time to change to the regular setup.

Anyone give me any advice on how difficult changing the shocks from one type to another is, and how much my wallet will be lightened by?

Done my shocks just recently. Quite easy- less than an hour , but remember to hold with 2nd spanner - the threaded section to stop it turning,  at top of shock (where it comes through to the boot)  while you undo the nut.

I was led to understand that the air shocks are self levelling because of the xenon headlights. so if you have these fitted you may encounter a problem with standard shocks. Other members may help here with this xenon headlight thing. I may well of been advised incorrectly.

Don't think you can get aftermarket air shocks (I tried after being quoted £120 each + vat by VX Stealers. ) Even from a breaker they wanted £45 each for them.

Searched around private breaking ad's and got a real good pair for £20 , quick clean up and a coat of engine black and  theylook like new.  Handling is so much better.

Regards, Big al

2 separate systems. HID's have their own levelling system, level switch FNS wishbone & RNS radius arm.

Proper self levelling shockers for the back have been discussed recently & I THINK MarksDTM quoted £70 ish each on Trade Club

Normal shocks around £50, self levelling around £72 on TC (inc VAT)

Thanks for the info fellas...  :y

It sounds like I'll be after the standard shocks.  Anyone know if these are a straight swap, or will I need to think about any other parts?

Since my self-levelling compresser failed I'm keen to avoid the self-levellers.

Just a straight swap. Tie the plastic air lines back out of the way.
