My 2.6l has the same symptoms. The blue smoke appears, only on start-up after an overnight rest, after about 5 secs. and disappears after another 5/10 secs., then the engine runs perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I've concluded that it's definitely valve stem seals.
I've decided to leave mine for the time being, but am concerned about carbon build up in time (although this I suppose is not all that serious), or more importantly, possible damage to the cats. It's just passed the MOT with no cat. problems, apparently, so if it gets no worse I'll do the full monty when it's time for a cambelt job. (not for another 25k really, but might bring that forward). I just hope that Entwood's fears about break-up don't come to pass.

Cant see them breaking up haveing seen them in the flesh....were not talking about the old rubber washers Rover used on the V8's.

That's reassuring, Mark. I suppose it's one of those annoying problems that are easier to live with than to solve.
