Fault code 1690 - really worried!!!
« on: 19 April 2008, 09:34:52 »

Hi, driving to work this morning the EML came on and the car started to struggle.  If I get the revs above 4000rpm the light disappears and the car returns to normal but the minute they get back under 3000rpm the light comes back.  There is no untoward noises coming from the engine and when the light is off the car runs fine.

Read the codes and I've got a knock sensor fault code from a week or so ago (was running low on lpg) and a new code 1690 - which according to top buzz is MIL malfunction/Engine Fail.   :'(

I'm really worried for the fact the engine light is working fine and has been for as long as I can remember.  Anyone had this code before and what was the cause apart from the MIL.  I would imagine some worrying noises would be heard from the engine if it was failing, surely?

Thanks in advance...

Stop worrying. This code is just poorly worded. It doesn't mean that
you Engine is failing, just that your warning light for sensor
problems is throwing a wobbly.

Stick a volt meter in parallel with your battery, rev your engine
up and down the range, and see if you are getting any voltage
fluctuations that could be throwing a curved ball into your electronics.

Thanks Grumpy, I can throw a sigh of relief then.  Had a strange electrical problem yesterday as well with my aircon so there must be some bad wiring somewhere on the car.  I'll have a look.
