Cambelt on 1998 V6
« on: 06 May 2008, 08:11:22 »

Hi,

Is there anyone on here that can replace my cambelt on my newly acquired 1998 2.5 Estate?

If not, how many hours labour might a garage charge?

I would prefer it to be changed by an enthusiast and seems a few of you on here have done your own.

I'd have a go myself but I am mechanically challenged in the patience department.

Thanks
Mike

Don't get a garage to do it m8.
I'm no mekanik, i did my first oil change when I bought the mig. But even I did my cambelt.
You'll pay a garage upwards of 150.00 for a hap-hazard job & from what i've read on here, your timing will still be out & a lot of them don't use a locking kit.
Buy the cambelt kit, water pump & aux belt from VX with a trade card. Get someone local to you with a TC to help.
Rent the locking kit from autovaux (£15 for the week +£100 deposit)
Buy the DVD from the shop. Best 3 quid odds you'll ever spend.
I watched the dvd, then had a portable dvdplayer on top of the engine while I did it.
You'll spend maybe 4-5 hours on it, but at the end everything will be mint, your timing will be spot on & believe me the end-of-job cup of coffee while the car sits ticking over never tasted better :y

As said above ;)

Try the DVD (only £3), and then make a decision.  Don't let anyone do it without locking kit, no matter how good they say they are!
