Dear All,

Need your kind help once again please.

the front drivers side wheel is making all sorts of funny noises!  Ill admit i did drive the car for some time ignoring it; and it resulted in a tyre needing replacing; however upon replacing and having the car lazer aligned; the problem is still there!

The noise is that similar to a defective wheel bearing, not noticable at low speeds, but up he speed past 30 and its like the wheel bering has had it, then around 40 it goes quuite, and whilst slowing down and apllying brakes it goes louder and then quite at standstill.

Now my mech to whom ive dropped it off said its not he wheel bearing, to which im a bit suspicious, but ok fine if its not that then a warped disc you think?

Do i take the discs off and check if they are flat as a pankackae, if not its safe to assume they are warped?

that mech needs to be shot; thats what i said tooo!  Def has to be bearing, i cant see that noise being replicated by anything else.

Im not getting any wheel woble through the steering either; and it tracks straight and true!!!

How do i test a wheel bearing?

Jack up the corner until the wheel is free of the floor.

Pull/push the wheel rim at 12/6 o'clock and then 3/9 o'clock to assess the available free play.  You are pulling at 12 whilst pushing at 6, as it were....

Get an assistant to depress the footbrake hard and repeat the 12/6 and 3/9 test.

If the movement vanishes or is substantially removed, wheel bearing is the culprit...

Also be aware that you can get runbling from a bearing even if play is not detectable!

Its worth noting that a wheel bearing can be changed in about 30-40mins and costs 35 quid....

Hindsight is wonderfull. I must like being at Vauxhall cos I never thought about a pattern bearing. :-? At least I have a proper bearing on my car!

What i dont get is; how will this noise or free play as such stp when the brake pedal is pressed?

Will try this method and report back to you guys!

O/T the ever grwoing argument of OE parts; but ill anger some by saying, oe parts are the way to go; but i do belive smaller minor parts can be bought from the likes of GSF or what not!

The brake acts on the disc which is on the rotating part of the hub.....so if there is play in the bearing then the brake effectively clamps the rotating hub section to the fixed part and stops the play....

As for OEM parts, contitech are very good, not some cheap chinese types

Should have also added, its worth trying driving around with the spare wheel fitted to the problem corner to rule tyre issues out.

Tyre: well new tyres on this axle, so cant be that!!!
