Difficulty turning key in ignition
« on: 11 June 2008, 14:23:44 »

Hi

I seemed to have developed this problem when I insert the key in the ignition and try to start up. Basically the key won't turn and I have to spend a few minutes gently trying to encourage it. It slides in OK but just won't turn. After a few minutes it will finally turn and I can start up. But I do turn the engine off, I can restart providing I don't remove the key from the ignition.

Will I need a part or something.

you probably need a new barrrel

My advice to you - get the key in position 1, and leave it there - this is the only time you can remove the barrel properly!

There seems to be a bit of this happening at the moment (weather related?).

But I agree with James,  it will only get worse and you NEED to be able to get the ksy to pos one in order to remove the barrell.  If you leave it too late you will be in a catch 22 with not being able to turn the key to remove the barrel.

Thanks for the replys.

Is it easy to remove the barrel yourself or should I refer to a dealer?

Also if the barrel is changed, can I keep the same key or do I have to change it?

I don't have the car pass.

If at all possible I would be very grateful if somebody could give me an idiots guide on how to remove the igntition barrel.

Basically I am out here in Doha, Qatar and coming back to the UK for a visit in two weeks. I have just spoken to Vauxhall in Ilford, Essex and they can order a new barrel based on my chassis number from Opel in Germany.

Therefore I would like to remove the old one before I come back, so would be very grateful if someone could provide a step by step guide.

many thanks.

You are right to be worried, because if you can't turn the key, you won't be able to remove the barrel (without recourse to an angle grinder..)

It is covered in Haynes.   Basically remove the plastic shroud above and below the ignition lock,  turn key to the first position (1 click),poke a pin punch/nail/drill bit through the small hole that is facing you -this releases a catch and the barrel will pop out.

Mark,

In your guide, you say 'it is possible' to disassemble the barrel, but not how.  Can you expand on that?

cheers

I will when I do it again (not done one for 12 months and cant remember the exact procedure).

But basically you end up removing the centre tumbler (think there is just a single clip) with the key still inserted. If you now slowly and carefully remove the key whilst supporting the tumbers you can remove the tumblers, clean the faces on some fine wet and dry and re-fit with a little lube.

To adjust the tumblers you then fully insert the key and re-pofile the small protruding parts of the tumblers.....

Thanks for that. Now I have some hope of removing the ignition barrel and will bring it with me back to the UK for a clean up.

I managed to get ignition barrel so thank you very much for the advice, much appreciated. However, I did find the small sring / clip a bit of a b*gg*r to get to!

Anyway got the ignition barrel indoors and accidently pulled the key out. :'( Then spent ages trying to get it turn again. Wife said I'll have a go and turned it immediately!! :-[

One other thing I noted is that the indicator is not self cancelling, is this related?

No, check the stlak is fully home in its housing (it clips into a frame on the steering column)

Thanks for that. yes, I had disturbed the plastic housing which I have now snapped back into place.

Incidentially I'm getting faster at removing the ignition barrel!
