well got me a set of 16" alloys today with 225/55/R16/v on them

my car presently has a set of 15" alloys with 195/65/R15/V on them.

couple of questions.

what will happen to the speed of the car when i put the new alloys on. i have heard that as they are bigger my actual speed will be faster then that indicated on my speedo. is this true and if so how would i find out how much faster?

the 16" alloys what sized tyres can i put on them? does it have to be the 225/55 or can i change the size slightly? if so what does anyone recommend?

I cant remember the link, but there is a site that you can put the 2 tyre sizes on and it shows the speedo difference.

you could put 225/50's on and be a tad below on the speedo reading, or I blieve you can have the correction done for the tyre change by Tech2

instruments and MID can be reprogrammed for that tyre size on minifacelifts and later.

225/55/16 isn't the cheapest size tyre though...

just a warning , this size tire will change the behaviour of the car in curves so be carefull..

but in general will be comfortable..

true - which is why a tight git like me has put 225/50/16's on again - added bonus of marginaly less tyre roll and speedo is only out by 3%

i am not sure to be honest jaime. its a 1999  T plate.

i have seen the price of tyres and yes expensive. but only about a £20 dearer then the ones i have got now.

will the drive become smoother with bigger tyres on (swapping the alloys over?) or not?

what about fitting 205 or 215 ? instead of 225.

Yes, mini facelift.

As a rule of thumb, for the same car/suspension setup, the higher the profile, the higher the comfort as there is more 'give' in the tyre.  Lower profile tends to improve handling response for same reason.

So, you're going from a 195/65 to a 225/55  (and the 2nd number is a ratio of first) so a noticable lowering of profile.  Even so, I think the ride comfort will not really be affected.

It should prove slightly better handling with a marginal decrease in comfort.

Though, to be honest, my MV6 runs 235/45/17, and although noticably 'taughter' than the Elite on 225/55/16, is equally as comfy, and have no issues doing 15hr stints behind the wheel...
