Fan speed dependant on accelerator posistion?
« on: 19 June 2008, 13:50:20 »

I've noticed if I have the blowers/fan on on say 2-3 (So you can hear it ) and accelerate slightly harder than gently thw fans slow/stop unless you come off the throttle?

Im not sure if it does it with or without air-con on but just wondered why they do this and if its normal?

Is this your heater fans?
If I understood your  post this used to be standard when cars had dynamos/weak charging systems.
The fan motor is potentially a heavy current user ('specially in the context of '60s/70s car electrics) - as the engine speeds up the alternator or dynamo would cut in and/or increase the output voltage, hence the fan speed would increase.

For highish fan speed settings I guess this could still be so, or it might be highlighting a weakness in your electrics, tired battery or lazy charging system.

Have never noticed this myself. But, Im sure someone will be able to give you an explanation in due course.

I did once have a citroen that would only power the fan when the vehicle was moving... mind you the whole car was bleeding well posesed. windows, sunroof would open as and when.. doors would unlock. it even started itself up once! Ughh glad the creepy thing went.... kept expecting it to drive itself back to my house.

Yeah, heater blowers

The fan that blows air around the cabin.

I dont think its anything to do with the charging system as the headlights/instruments dont dim.

Im kinda worried now as no one has said "perfectly normal" lol

Bruce, my first thought is that the motor is not actually changing speed at all but, that you may have a vac leak and the air direction is changing with wider throttle position due to the lower manifold vaccum.

So, I would be doing a little bit of listening/feeling to see if that is the case.....and then maybe looking for vac leaks.

Well, the change of speed is audible as when I accelerate you can hear the air noise slow and as soon as I come off the throttle you can hear the air rushing through again, most strange.

Is there any common hoses that break?

I have the same thing on my 1995 2.5 cdx auto petrol.  If I have the air blowing towards my face and accelerate the air goes to the front screen vents so that the air blows onto the screen, the fan also seems to go slower.  I have a small flag that sits in the corner of my side of the screen and can see it flutter when accelerating and not moving when normal driving again.  Don't know if it is a safety thing but it is great if the screen is slightly misted as it clears it(makes sense to me faster speed means that you need more forward visibility)

Hope this helps
