They are broadly similar (same pinout, etc.) but would have different maps in.

so do you think i could run a 3L with a 2.5L ECU? all i want to do is start the car and check the warning lights go out

I think for your purposes it would work. However, the immobilier and key are coded to the ECU so you can't  just swap out the ECU for a test.

It would probably drive as rough as a bear's @rse though.

If a car with RF remotes (as opposed to the very early ones with IR remotes) you'll need to code the ecu to immobiliser, and the transponders to immobiliser, so not a straight ecu swap.

The 2.5 one will have wrong map, so not sure it will run, or if it does, will run badly

Do you not have the ECU ect from the 3.0 your presumably putting in?

Seem to remember that the 2.5 and 3.0 ECUs are the same part number and that a later ECU can be used as a replacement for all previous ones. Cant check at present but would make sense......3.0 injectors are slightly larger (flow rate) than 2.5 and all sensors etc are the same so a different base map wouldnt be necessary. The engine would soon work out its own adaptations to the base map.

Still need to keep ecu, key and transponder as a set though.

not changing the engine just trying to sort the problem out with my car,,, trail and error really,,, i have a 2.5L calibra and thought i could just swap them over to see if it solves my problem,,,
 the car is much to nice to break up plus i wont get that much for it if i sell as a non runner.
 it was running like a dream then left for 3 days and all of a sudden developed the ignition fault,,, will try and disconnect the alternator,, maybe something is touching in it or arching,,,
 big problem,,,,

ECU failures are very rare. I'd start looking at the ignition system itself. Plugs, leads, coil pack, cam covers, etc. More likely IMHO, especially if it got damp while standing.

Any fault codes in the current ECU?

the problem is the ignition lights stay on with the key removed,, it still started for a couple of days then just turn over and maybe kick up but cut out again,,, it was like the ECU didnt recognise the key,,, i`ve not checked for fault codes yet,,,

 been very dry today maybe it dried something out,, i really dont know..

Not sure about the ignition lights staying on with the key removed though. Sounds like either a faulty ignition switch or maybe a short between the switched an permanent live (power sounder OK?) :-/

well that was short lived,,, prob still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 i`ve taken the back of the ignition off and the lights still stay on,, now when i reconnect the battery the alarm goes off and nothing will turn it off unless i disconnect the battery,,,
 whats a power sounder??????
