Brake judder problem
« on: 02 July 2008, 21:43:12 »

I’ve got a weird brake problem, I’ve changed the brake discs and pads twice, bedded them in, but when I put my foot down on the brake the slowing is inconsistent, feels like warped discs, there’s a slight judder.

Checked the run-out of the discs, I’ve also changed the front brake calipers and changed the front wishbones, shocks and drop links.

Anything else it could be?

sounds like stuck caliper sliders to me.
Lubed with copper slip probably, or just seazed. Clean and lube with grease. Give a search a go mate. There was a long thread on this a couple of weeks ago, but not sure the subject was headed brakes. Hope helps.

Ps but you say youve changed the front calipers. Rears ok? Discs seated properly on clean hub surface? But run out ok. Wheel bearings ok? Be suprised. Not much left really? Anyone?

Yip I've regreased the sliders when I changed the calipers.

Wheel bearings........ hummm funny since I have a droning sound coming from the car, very quiet but I think my bearings would have to be really bad for it to affect my brakes  :-/ ??

Not really, wheel bearings take an inordinate amount of punishment when braking ... the discs acts like a gyroscope and the brakes apply a force in the gyroscopic plane, and if you know gyroscopic theory then you know about precession... this strains the bearing which is what opposes the force ... so any play or wear in a bearing will have an effect which will be much more pronounced under braking than normal running.

Would the bearings need changing at 86k?

not sure of service life but if they are original i would be impressed they lasted that long personally. Others will advise i am sure. But check them first, jack and rock top and bottom of wheel by hand. You should feel a tiny fraction of play at most, almost nothing at all at the max. Vx sell the bearing in the hub only, its pressed in. So they aint cheap,90 a corner iirc. unless you have means of pressing bearings in and out.  Worth a search, its there somewhere on here.

Cant help think tho, something more to it than just bearings, i have had bearing go in a small way and no juddering, so thinking they must be well buggerd if its that. Got to eliminate it tho. Hope helps.

Hi,
Worn or soft bushes in suspension can allso cause what appears as brake judder.

Had this problem on a Safrane with oil contaminated thus soft rubber bushes in lower suspension arm (similar to Omega wishbone)

Also know a friend who had seeming brake judder, and this was caused by faulty tyre with damaged cords in tyre. It looked OK, but tyre deformed under braking stress.

Try looking further afield than just the brakes.
