A couple of problems
« on: 25 June 2008, 20:57:37 »

I have a couple of problems that have just happened
First one is now and again if  I accelerate hard from stand still my traction control light has started to illuminate and stay on, it will not turn off again with the switch . The only way to turn it off again is to turn off the engine and restart it again.
I  can turn it off and on normally using the switch any suggestioins please  :-?
The other problem I had but think has sorted its self is that the temp gauge rose to max and the high temp light came on the water level is ok the car runs ok there is no oil in the water nothing coming from the exhuast that should not be, after checking everything I restarted the engine and the gauge returned to normal and was ok for a couple of days .
Then after a short trip and a stop and restart the same thing happened again checked levels again no problem restarted the engine and again returned to normal has been ok since and has been on a couple of trips with no problems or fluid loss at all
Again any ideas please

1st problem could be the ABS/TC ECU...

2nd, thermostat possibly??

Also check the wiring at the ABS contacts on the wheels, make sure none are crimped/worn or earthing.  And that the plug wiring contacts are clean and sound.

The temp thing could also be electrical.  The sensor contacts are in the rear of the V under the coolant bridge, I think.

Ideally it needs the ABS codes reading......

As for the temp gauge, it sounds like the sender wire might be shorting out on the coolant bridge

The two seem to be linked and its starting to be annoying now , the tc light comes on and then the temp gauge goes to max and the temp warning light comes on .
I did notice that the idle speed starts to hunt  too when this happens .
Yesterday I was out in the car parked up ok and went to restatr the car and nothing just dash lights and  nothing else . it was not the ignition switch i have my emergency get me started switch I keep in the car since the switch failed and tried this but it still would not start .
I had a poke about in the aux fuse box under the bonnet and tried again and it started and has been ok since (starting)  I wonder if these are related  :question

If wiggling fuses and relays has made it "go away", then a dodgy connection was most likely to blame - sometimes we get lucky!

Best check your battery and alternator output if you have/can get hold of a meter.  About 12.5V with everything off; 13-13.5 volts (at the battery) on idle; rising to not much more than 14-14.5V at 2000rpm - all depending on the state of your battery.

i wonder if there is a common link between the two within the instrument cluster?

I had the fuses and relays all out of the engine fuse box and cleaned the terminals of the relays and fuses with a glass fibre pen cleaner but nothing obvious found .
The engine did start to hunt when it was idling then the light (tc) came on turned off the engine but it would not restart  for a while then it did .
There is something really strange going on somewhere .
On the way home last night it was perfect , it was the same Sunday as well no problem for over 100 miles then it just came on .
Looks like it needs codes reading , so I will attempt to do pclip test and see if anything comes up

Temp guage and dash sounds like the wire from the temp sensor is either loose or not connected.  Make sure the spade is connected firmly on and the wiring has no splits.  I took the spade off on mine and closed it a bit with a pair of pliars. Not sure of its location on your car.

As for the traction control light and the trouble starting - I reckon that's wiring related as well.  I recently had a knock sensor code coming up every time I went over 2000rpm and would disappear at 4000rpm.  Found the soldered wires linking the sensors to my lpg conversion were all touching and needed seperated with insulation tape.
