Help needed, starting problem
« on: 10 July 2008, 18:59:38 »

Hi guys n gals,

firstly the car concerned is a Corsa B, not an Omega I have a problem with it that I am struggling to rectify, hoping you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

The problem is the starter motor keeps clicking when you try to start it, sometimes will start, sometimes won't.

How it happened

Daughter started car (lots of noise) drove couple miles car died.  I traced the problem to the ignition switch, had jammed in start pos (known fault).  So, starter burnt out, which took out the battery.

Parts replaced so far, New starter motor, battery, ignition barrel and while I was there a new ignition switch.

But problem is still there, starter clicks!

I Have checked the wiring (Ignition circuit) and can find no sign of any breaks/damage.

I have
11.5-12v at stater motor both switched and feed
11.5-12V at the ignition switch
12.55V at battery
cleaned all earth points

One thing I have noticed is, when you turn ignition to start, starter clicks but when it springs back you can see arcing in the switch itself.
(not present when engine fires)

When I connect my jump pack to bat it usually starts after a couple of clicks.

I'm guessing the problem is Electrical/voltage related, but am at a loss as to what is causing it.

Car was fine before starter motor burnt out

Hope you can help

Roland

What happens when you connect a jump lead between the battery positive and the starter main supply contact?

Haven't tried that, but have checked the voltage at the battery positve and main feed on starter and they read the same. If I jump it what would I be looking for?
