Water water everywhere and a thrown fan belt -AGH
« on: 27 July 2008, 11:34:15 »

Last night driving down the M1 - Engine light.... Loss of power steering.... lots of steam..... Pull over....RAC take me home..

Looking at the engine bay this morning, the car has thrown off  that lovely belt that wraps around the pulleys and water is pissing out of whichever nice shiney pulley is at the bottom.... ITs not broken it has come off.

Is this terminal - Is this the water pump seizing?  Car still starts and runs (clearly not going to drive it with no water though.)

Temperature guage at  time of problem was normal.

I'm sure you guys can break the news to me in your own inimitable style?  :-/

The waterpump should be the centre pully, the bottom pulley is the crankshaft.

Yes = me being stupid.... As you look at the front of the engine looks like 4 things that the belt wraps around.

top one on left hand side (as you look at it) seems to be just a pulley
one below that seems to drive something and seems fine

One with the problem is the top big one in the centre of the engine - that seems mashed - Thats where the water is flowing out of..... any help?

centre onw= water pump.  Replace is relatively easy.  however is you are within 10,000 miles of a new cambelt then I'd do that as well as you've got to strip most of the same gubbins off to get at the water pump.  However it is up to you, the cambelt is not water pump driven on the V6 (I'm guessing you have a V6).

Thank you for that - Yes due a cambelt change so will get it done at the same time... Does anyone have an idea how much this job is likely to cost me? Any volunteers / mechanics out there who want the work?
