cambelt change problem

hi every one 2.2 petrol 1999 started to change cambelt & water pump today no problem, i changed tensioner idlers and water pump the kit is continental water pump qh when i came to refit belt the cam is locked there does not appear to be enough slack on belt to get it on without moving crankshaft at least 2 teeth out the tensioner is backed right off but which ever way i try to put belt on it always moves crank out of timing it is probally somthing simple but after trying 2hours i will have a fresh start tomorrow trouble is everything is still the same.thankyou for any help.

First off, make sure the water pump is correctly aligned as per the following diagram:



Now, remove the upper left idler and thread the belt starting at the cams, working down the right side to the crank (this side neds to be tight), around the tensioner and water pump before passing around the casting wheer the idler mounts back to the cams.

Now pop the idler in and set the tension.
