Omega TD - Tuning
« on: 09 August 2008, 15:22:55 »

Good afternoon peeps,

I done a search on google/this forum in hope that i would find some info i didnt... :(

I am interested in buying a pre 2001 Omega TD, i know they use the BMW M51 engine, however i was wondering if the engines can be tuned...e.g. more turbo boost/fueling...

Do these engines need to be mechanically or electronically tuned?
What sort of power gains are typically gained?

Why does the M51 in the vauxhalls create less power? Im assuming its down to a smaller intercooler and less boost...

Cheers any info appreciated.

Vx detune it because they chose a weak gearbox.

Easy to get back to BMW spec (£70 delivered for the chip), but only if you have a manual, or change to a stronger autobox.

I wouldn't overtune this engine too much, it is not the strongest in the world, and failures tend to vary between expensive (cracked heads) to catastrophic (rods through blocks).

Ah right cool, i've heard about cracked heads before a few years ago i was considering the 325TDS E36, however once again theres not alot of info on the M51 engines.

Hmm, i was hoping it could be tuned a bit more than that...Was thinking more of a project diesel, was going to potentially do a FMIC and try source a different turbo...Would of been fun, oh well back to the drawing board me thinks.

Well if its purely a project car, then its not a real problem if it goes bang ;)

Omegatoy and I were going to revane my spare turbo, but ran out of time.

If you are tuning it, I would reduce the oil change interval from 3k (I know BMW says 4.5k Max, but thats too long for this engine) to a bit lower.  The intake hoses will need strengthening if you're upping the boost (has a mechanical wastegate, so may be limits to major boost changes).

Cooling will be an issue, though you may as well throw away the viscous that BMW always love.  ITs bloody hopeless, and as reliable as any other viscous, anyway.

Oh, and remember, that BMW TDS lump weighs about 3 million tons, and is always going to make the front very heavy...

Well it be the daily driver too :( I was hoping for 180bhp out of it if im honest, but ive heard about heads cracking due to extra heat previously...

I love trying to make my cars an all rounder :D

Currently im driving a Mk2 Mondeo TD, so far its running 18psi of boost opposed to 15psi, more fueling and ive cleaned the intercooler properly...

However probably only pushing out 110bhp...As for torque figures, wouldnt say its much either as i can maintain traction whilst wide on throttle in the wet lol....In other words its slow and horrible! Still not fully tuned tho...But its a temporary car.

Anyways guys cheers for the info you have provided so far, alot more than whats "out there"

My Automatic tractor is running a 'near bmw spec' chip, and has been a bit of a handful all day in this weather.  A manual would be even more fun ;D

well mine is a bitch on a bend out here!! too much boost methinks cos its spins its wheels without provoking it easily!! standing starts are a nitemare cos it spools up so quick now it just spins the wheels!!!
However more to the point i know a guy who has an Omega with  FMIC CHIPPED AND STRAIGHTTHRU HORSEPIPE, huge great big cone filter, custom 4 core radiator etc etc and on the rolling road it made 234 bhp and 419torque,]
last tiem i saw him it was still hanging together  but he was trying to source an organic clutch to handle the torque cos it kisses std ones goodbye inside 5k miles, I know he blew one engine up before he got to the current stage of tune, but he reckons it was just high mileage that caused it!!

Perfect guys just what i wanted to hear.

As for Mv6 etc, i dont want one due to insurance reasons, ive had a fault accident recently due to a deer, so high insurance group cars are out of the question...

Insurance companies dont seem to care much about diesels and arent too bad when it comes to remapped ones either!

I've had 2 x Calibras in the past...Wanted a Cali V6 but due to insurance reasons staying away from one...The omega is looking like a very good option!

If you're local to me, you're welcome to look and try my tractor, though I'm guessing you will be better off with a manual.
