How to jack to check idler?
« on: 13 August 2008, 16:02:09 »

There are four jacking points on the sills.

The guide on checking your idler says jack up the front so both wheels are off the ground. I have tried to jack up one side in order to get an axle stand under it, so I can then jack up the other side to do the same, but it feels and looks very dodgy.

I am worried about jacking the other side and the car tipping the stand over as . Is there a central jacking point I can use to check the idler?

I have a very good jack, and two good axle stands. It is the jacking up so high to get a stand under that fills me with a sense of foreboding that when I jack the other side, the 'tip' will make the first stand topple over.

Jack the car up from the crossmember under the engine, just behind the sump.

I tend to drive up ramps first, and then while the car is already quite high, jack the car and transfer to axle stands.

Thanks. Is the cross member in the same place on a 2.2 DTi?

My advice is this

Jack up one side mid-height, get a stand under there.

Same for other side, get a stand under.

If it then needs to go up more, alter one side at a time, making sure the stand is on all legs and stable.

Once securely on the stands, place the jack up against the crossmember (not enough to lift the car) as a "get out of jail free card" as a knowledgable chap around here once taught me :y

Jacking on the cross member doesn't give you much room to swing the handle and I don't think it Jacks as well.

So you can definitely check the idler by jacking on the passenger side only?

I currently have the car jacked like this and, with the wheels pointed straight ahead, I cannot make the wheel rock from side to side at all.

I don't want to assume the idler is ok, as I have what I consider to not be correct handling.
