Leaking From Radiator Drain Plug?
« on: 08 September 2008, 15:02:10 »

Hi

Looks like I'm losing a small amount of coolant from somewhere around the radiator drain plug area. Can never actually catch it in action though so I've bought a new sealing ring for the plug.

Is this a normal area for coolant to leak?

If not, what is the normal area (near radiator, passenger side)?

Thanks!

Just the one? ;) There are two 'O' rings. It'd be far easier to change the whole drain tap, they're only a couple of quid.

I changed mine last year as I thougt mine might be leaking, the coolant seemed to be dripping from there. It turned out my cooant was escaping from the rad further up running down.  :(

Thanks for the heads up...

I've just bought the outer seal and not the o-rings, should have bought the whole thing as you said. Where was yours leaking from. I've looked all over the place from the top with a torch, cannot see any evidence of leakage (and I've got nice pink staining coolant)?

I think you've confused the shake proof washer for a seal of some kind. The sealing of the tap is done just by the 2 'O' rings as per my photo the other night. click hereMy rad had a small hole in it nearer the top of it. Not a problem in itself, but I was over 300 miles from home on a caravan site with the caravan. Not that I'm a great fan of such things, I added a can of Holt's Leak Stop (or what ever they call it) and it got me home. I've since fitted a new rad from Vx - IIRC about £200 on Trade Club
