Slight smell with air/con and heating
« on: 26 September 2008, 12:43:20 »

2002 3.2 ex police omega estate.

My air con doesn't work. I have had it re-charged and I assume I have a leak. I have read through air con matters in the general help and have identified that the compressor is not working.

Before I take it to an Air Con specialist, can I say that what is really irritating me is a very slight, but unpleasant smell pervading the car through the heater system. It isn't the same smell as a failed heater matrix, but its a bit like it.

I haven't had the car long. I am not too bothered about having no air con but does anybody know if you do you get a mingy whiff from a failing air con system?

By the way. It ISN'T a PORK smell!!!

Get a can of aircon deoderiser from Halfords or similar..about £10..sounds like you have the start of  a bacterial smell which if left will give you headaches and flu like symptoms when driving.
Aircon compressor replacements are pricey and quite difficult so expect a sizable bill if you want it working and the compressor is leaking ..best course of action is to get a charge in the system and seeif it is leaking and then go from there

under the right conditions i might get a nif out of mine. But not all the time. As said i have heard of products to deal with the smell. The pump is worrie and could well be pricey but some of the breakers on here can help for very sensible money. Tbh i think a diagnosis from an ac specialist is the place to start. Dont use quick fit up or halfrauds they have not a clue.

I've used the aircon deoderiser from Halfords, worked ok for me. You put it in the car with the aircon on and let it go.

worth a try

Clean out the pollen filter casing of any decomposing crud that may be there and replace the pollen filter with new when you are there.  The aircon freshener thingies work quite well so worth a go.  Also, keep a good eye on the coolant water level - might well be a coolant leak that takes a wee while to show up....

Before you get a compressor, check the following : Looking at car from the front, right-hand side of radiator, as you look down this side of the rad, first is the 'top hose', then the 'primary thermostatic switch', next is the 'secondary thermostatic switch', it is best to get at it from below, make sure the connector is fitted correctly ie plug locked onto the tabs. Reason : it has a 'gnd' for the 'aircon compressor' without this contact the compressor does not run !!!!.

If the gas has leaked out ,the compressor wont work.best to check for leaks and then regas and see if compressor is working.
