ABS and Traction Control warning lights
« on: 08 October 2008, 14:20:39 »

ABS and TC warning lights come on intermittently. When they do the speedo and cruise control stop working and the steering usually gets heavier. The situation stays like that for the majority of the time whereas when it first started it was just occasional. Any ideas anyone?

Hi

This sounds to me like the classic symptoms of ABS ECU failure. Do a search on the subject on this forum. There is a wealth of info including how to change the part, where it is (under the power steering pump on V6), how fiddly it is to do and where you can source a part from e.g. get one reconned by a company like BB Reman.

It is possible that it is something simpler but that would be my pessimistic prognosis.

Can you update your profile with year, auto/manual, engine size as this helps people answer Q's. I bet yours is a 97 to 2000 car!

Identical problem on the old miggy ... sorted by sending the ABS control box to BBA Reman on a Monday, they fixed it and returned it by Friday .. for £130 (July 2007 prices).. excellent service...

Give them a ring on 01634 687222  and have a chat ... will only cost a phone call initially.

Actually removing/replacing is a bit of a pig .. as you can't see 4/6 bolts .... but it is doable ....  just don't have a swearbox nearby .. you'll fill it/run out of cash very quickly !!

Yea sounds like you are having the same problem as myself, all 3 stopped working first of all (speedo, cruise and steering was heavy) but now the steering is fine, but the speedo and cruise does not work, yet no lights on the dashboard and ABS and traction control works perfectly.

I was told to check fuses etc, and eventually norrowed it down to a dodgy relay, although after refitting it, it worked for about a day and now the symptons have come back again :(

Sorry for stealing thread a bit, but this chappy has his TC/ABS warning lights on, on mine TC/ABS working ok, and steering is fine, yet no lights and speedo and cruise not working also.

Still a related problem to mthe ABS ECU ?

Anywhere near Bedfordshire, where you would recommend where I can take mine to go and get looked it, there is no way i'd have the patience to  do the ABS ECU myself

Just to check .. the only thing not working on yours is speedo and cruise ?? and all warning lights are out ??

Check fuses ... both the main ones by your knees, and the ones in the triangular box by the battery

Yup, post 1998 ABS ECUs seem to be prone to that issue.

yea I checked all those today, took most of the ones out in the triangular box, cleaned and then put back, fuses and relays, could it perhaps be a dodgy relay, also the fuses by my knees in the driver foot well they are all fine, as I checked all those earlier on today

Deffo ABS ECU.  Possible to get 2nd hand one (off OOF or fleabay - usually around £40).  U need to get same part nº as on yours and ideally from exactly same year and model (else will require reprogging with Tech2).  Pig of a job to do - limited access and 4/6 bolts undo/do up by feel only.
Good Luck.
