3.2 v6 oil cooler question

Hi, my main dealer tells me I need my oil cooler fixed as there is oil in the header tank.  They say its not the head gasket.  My garage that usually services it say they can't find an oil cooler.  Please can anyone give me some more info on where or what the oil cooler is?
The reason I don't want the main dealer to do the work is that they said that the front bushes needed to be replaced at a cost of £650 which an independent garage said would last another two years easily.  They want £565 to fix the oil cooler, but I simply don't trust them any more.

If your local independant can't find the oil cooler I'm not sure I'd even want to take to them.
The cooler sits in the midle of the V ..... there's a how-to-do on the forum somewhere.

Absolutley, if they cant find an oil cooler tey are not fit to do the job!

Its about a 3 hour job and 100 quids worth of parts.

 ;D that thought did spring to mind.  My Omega is a 2001 estate elite 77,000 miles so not worth too much these days.  When the main dealer told me a service, front bushes and oil cooler fix, MOT and some other little bits would cost £1,850 I just fell off my chair!
I'm afraid I'm going to have to take my chances in order to keep my Omega running.

Oil Cooler - £100 in parts - Handy with a set of spanners? Be a about a day to do all in.

Bushes - £50 for the pair, with wishbones attached! - Either DIY or i suggest Wheels in Motion.

Where abouts in London are you?

dont drive it with a buggered oil cooler, the sludge can block the matrix and rot the coolant pipes and seals. The cooler i believe aint cheap, but i am sure someone will know. Fairly easy diy, when i did my oil cooler cover leak, only problem i had was getting the oil pipes out of the way to get the cooler out. Had to bend them in the end as i did not have crows feet/flair nut spanner.

Chaps, as anyone mounted an 'external' oil cooler? Iirc there are suitable connection places in the block, but they wouldnt be thermostatic. Just interested for the old drifty damage limitation! Having said that, not found the oil filter yet  [smiley=rolleyes.gif]  ;D

Unbolt them from the block near the oil filter then you don't need to bend them!  :y

I'm in South Woodford.  Looking at the procedure it looks fairly straightforward, but perhaps I stick to what I'm good at (driving a laptop) and let a professional do it :-) I was thinking about asking the guy who wrote the how to to do it.

You could do that, or have a look at the OOF map to see who is near to you. Button is at the top of the page on the bar. PM me if you need the password and add your own marker too.

Failing that (my first choice would be) contact JamesV6CDX who is now running a fully insured mobile Omega mechanics service. He sticks to the engine bay mostly so this is right up his street.

Yep. Thats what i needed the crows feet/flair nut spanner for, no access for a normal open ended spanner which slips and buggers the nut. They where bloody tight. Tried all else but had no choice but to bend then in the end as i needed the car on monday. Correct tools always a good idea, as the guide mentions iirc.
