Clanky engine
« on: 11 October 2008, 12:47:27 »

Hi all, my engine is very clanky when starting from cold, but goes away after about 1 to 2 miles journey.  The rest of the journey, the engine sounds great.  Also, it sounds to me like it is back firing for the first few hundred metres of travel.  Again, once it ticking over for a bit, the clanking and back firing goes away.  I can really notice the back firing when you press the accelarator and then quickly release it...like pumping it.  Any ideas anyone?  I've checked the oil on straight and level.  The oil isn't black and seems ok and the level indicator shows it just under the halfway point between low and high.  Recently had the CAT replaced and engine diagnostics check.  The garage didn't pick anything up. Arrr!

4 pots suffer blocked breather and throttle assembley and cam sensor issues,(clean all 3) the odd hg as well(change coolant regular to schedule)
also change plugs genuine vx are cheapest, and make sure no oil in plug wells :y

also try paperclip test, guides in maintenance section ;)

Found the following link...

This explains a lot.  I won't be trying this one myself, but know now what to tell the garage!  Any ideas on how long this job should take them...just so that I know the cost, roughly?

Many thanks.  FT.

...throttle/breather assembly cleaned and the small pipe leading to engine replaced.  Also they found that it didn't even have a gasket between the darn things.  Tried to download from the car brain but wouldn't work, but said that when they disconnected the idle speed control valve connector it didn't turn off the engine or do anything of note.  They are 98% sure it is the idle speed valve that's faulty as the car now revs like mad when I put the clutch in!  It didn't do that before the bits were cleaned.  Going to get a second hand one from megavaux...£17 inc VAT...not bad as new is apparently £110 for part only!  However, car is a bit more responsive, smoother and doesn't misfire first thing in the morning!

Any suggestions for good reliable budget tyres for Omega's?  Mine came with Accelera's...what a load of crap!
