Cool Running
« on: 02 December 2008, 13:33:56 »

I've noticed over the last few days in this cold snap that my running temp is low. Sitting on the motorway or driving along at reasonable speed the needle *just* gets above the 80 mark. Sitting in traffic it slowly climbs and if Im crawling for long enough it will eventually top 90 then the fan kicks in and brings it down to 85 ish.

So I know the temp guage is reading accurately. I assume that 80 is too low, I am guessing it should be settling at around 85 on a run ?

I reckon its time for a new thermostat or is there something else I should look at ?

Cheers

There are two different temp guages with different temps quoted, depending on whether the car is facelift or prefacelift.  Basic rule of thumb is that the needle should sit just below mid way on the guage, irrespective of the numbers, and rise if stationary and brought back down by the fans kicking in.

Mine is running around 87 degrees according to the gauge, just below midway of the scale. When warming it rises to around 90 or so and when the stat opens it drops and keeps rising until 87. In heavy traffic (funnily on cold days especially) temp rises above 90 until the fans kick in

Today with the temp at -2 /-3 the temp needle  was under the 80 mark this was on the motorway at 70 mph Is this about right ,when stoped at work it the temp went up to 80 within 30 sec. Not sure if stat has gone :-/. Cabin temp seem,s fine. Also should the temp drop when the heaing is on my one is set at 23-24.

Is there a way of checking it is working with the Tech 2.

Thanks

Steve.

Dont forget at 70 on the motorway you will be flowing a lot of cold air through the rad. The fact you are doing 70 wont matter, it may well be cooler than slower speeds in traffic.

My pre-facelift 3.0 runs around 80 to 85 at the moment. Everything seems as it should so not worried.

How long does it take for the gauge to show an increasing temperature from a cold start? You should have an indication within about two miles.

Sounds like thermostat to me. The only times I have seen temperatures down to 80 or so is when the stat has needed to be changed.

It takes about 10 miles to reach 80, nothing much registers for the first 5 miles or so. No indication of the stat opening i.e. temp rising to a reasonable level then dropping back.

Due for a service in a few weeks so I think a new stat will be in order at the same time.
