Brake adjustment
« on: 24 December 2008, 14:21:54 »

On Saturday I am fitting new pads and adjusting the hand brake.

I do need to adjust them within the drum as well, can anyone remember which side I push down and which up, last time I did this was the Carlton

the best way i found to adjust the brakes on the back was to pull the handbrake up 3 notches then adjust them so they bite onto the drum

There is a guide by Mr DTM in the maint section - in colour!
The basic proceedure is slaken off underneath, adjust on either side until just clear, and then readjust underneath.   To do it thoroughly you would remove the disks and possibly shoes too , clean it all out, lube the mechanism etc

And the difference is.....

....servicing has nothing to do with changing parts  :y

So......take them off and sort them if doing the brakes  :y

As for which way to turn the internals....it depends which way the adjuster has been set so pot luck but, if you shine a torch through the adjuster hole you will be either able to see the threads or having turned the adjuster a few times will be able to see if its getting longer or shorter!

Just changed my back discs today, those hand brake shoes are a pain to adjust, I found one side was up, and the other down

if you take the disc off on the back martin you can get a file and take out that lip a bit and see which way to turn the adjuster at the same time ;)

Offside - turn adjuster wheel UP to tighten.
Nearside - DOWN to tighten.

But you can fit the adjusters both ways round so up/down depends on how the adjusters were fitted.

Martin, I had the plan of just fitted new handbrake pads.....but there was such a big lip on the inside of the drum that I had to lever the drum off and fit a new brake shoe fixing kit.

Then with it all off I decided I really needed new discs... which means new brake pads too and whilst I was at it one of the pad spring clips needed replacing.... so pad fixing kit too...

Anyway phoned up the local motor factors at 11am they got everything above in by 1pm the same day. Total cost £75 including VAT (the discs were £24 a pair!!) and all really nice quality (I'd say better than the Trade Club front discs and pads).

New stuff all nice and easy to fit too. Only joy was bedding in the new handbrake shoes meant I needed to adjust the handbrake 3 times in as many weeks - fine now though.
