Knocking noise
« on: 07 January 2009, 12:57:32 »

My migs developed a very annoying knocking from the front end it sounds like shot wishbones but they are both new.  There is no other play in things like steering idler arms, anti roll bar bushes etc.

Some did mention about a bush above the front springs how do you check this or anyone got any other ideas?

usual knock from the front is the anti-roll bar drop links (if not the WB's)  :y

The cars just had its MOT aren't the anti-roll bar links part of the test?

Had the same one mine last year and it was the drop links and had just had the MOT with a pass afew weekends before. They may have worn to the level of giving a knock but not to the point of not passing the MOT.

not sure if they are? if you think about it the antiroll bar isn't a critical primary part of the suspension such as the wishbones are or the steering idler (common steering mot failure).

not sure though??? :-/

edit:

and as SP says: may be ok for mot but still 'knock'

they're only about £7 each on ebay and simple to change :y

I see yes it makes sense these bushes are they the ones that hold the bar to the body of the car and look like clamps?

no they are 'drop links' (metal bar about 8" long with a balljoint at each end) which connect between a bracket on the strut and the anti roll bar :y

Hi, I had a knocking from the front of my omega which I couldnt find. I even told the garage when I had it mot'd so they could find it and change it for me. They passed the car and said nothing was found wrong with the front end. Was later told that the wear/play in drop link doesnt show up when the car is on the ramp/jacks and has no weight on the wheels.
Anyway, it was the drop link, which is easy to change and should only be about £12 depending on discount.
