Bottom End gone?
« on: 25 January 2009, 15:24:25 »

2.0 110k Manual

Going along putting foot down a fair bit 3rd gear 4500rpm then feels like hit a wall ( I thought it was rev limiter?) but alas no change up and no power shaking car. So coast down the hill and pull over.

Now its rpming a little less than normal and there's a regular big tapping/thudding noise along with the block shaking when the noise happens. Put down any gas and it gets ALOT worse.

AA towed home he said prob bottom end. Is he rights? No EML lights, oil leaks, odd exhaust smoke etc.

So basically;

1) Is AA guy correct?
2) Is it fixable as I have little money?
3) Would it be easier to swap the lump from other 2.0 omega?
4) Wait for summer and try to find another >£300 car as we need a car due to village location/lack of buses?

Cheers for any help  :-[

SOUNDS LIKE THE CAR HAS GONE INTO LIMP MODE AND LIMITS THE REVS TO PROTECT THE ENGINE FROM SERIOUS DAMAGE. YOU NEED TO DO A PAPER CLIP TEST TO FIND OUT WHAT CODES YOU HAVE ON THE ECU. WE CAN THEN GO FROM THERE AS TO BEST HELP YOU.

Nah its not limp mode have had that before. Theres something physically wrong with the block due to shaking.

Will try the paperclip later anyway although will that show up stuff that hasnt set off the EML?

Timing belt may have slipped a couple of teeth then. check the belt and tensioner as the rattle may be valves and piston having a come together.

Many many years ago I was in a car that suffered a big end failure and the symptoms were very similiar to what you describe. :'( :'(

Big end failures seem to be so rare these days, but providing the piston rod has not come completely adrift and damaged the cam shaft or the crank case walls, or both, then it is very repairable, given some time under the car / engine removed and some money. 8-) 8-)
