Omega dies when running
« on: 31 January 2009, 14:46:07 »

Bought myself a CD 2.5 V6 estate with a tatty exterior and 140k on the clock.

I thought I was getting myself a decent deal for a nice big bootspace and hopefully a decent reliability. Boy, was I wrong!

The car runs, but the battery discharges - I put a multimeter over the battery following a charge, and standing overnight, and got 12.9V, in the vehicle, I get 14.9V when the engine was running and 14.7 when I had accessories on, I know that 14.9 is slightly high, so maybe the voltage regulator has gone.

I was going down the motorway last week when I gave it some beans up a bridge and the engine stopped. Coasted off the motorway with a dead battery and managed to jump start it, 5 miles later, the same happened, but this time, it wouldn't start for love nor money - the battery was so dead that I couldn't leave the sidelights on with the hazards.

I charged the battery up once the RAC got me home, and did the paperclip trick, which gave a result of code 144 - no signal from immobiliser.

That made me think back to the engine not wanting to start...

I guess my questions are:

Can i disable the immobiliser easily enough to rule it out?

Do the readings from the alternator sound like it could be the problem?

One thing is for sure, the heated seats aren't going on again!
