drivers door opens while driving!
« on: 31 January 2009, 09:58:09 »

the doors being a difficult to close over the pas few days  :'((maybe the cold).

On the way home last night (late), had the central locking closed .. driving along hit a small bump in the road and herd a click - then while driving and reshing my arm on the door rest - it opened (but the ccentral locking is still locked - had to unlock the car before i could close it again.  :o

stopped to check it out, motor is running ok (does not look lazy, nor sticking). with the door closed & locked if you apply downwards pressure it opens - but the lock if still activated!!

will attempt to WD40 it today, but it possible its on the way out.

Possible looking at a preplacement door lock catch mechanism?

this problem would not be the door motor?

thoughts? :question

regards - rob

I'm not sure whether you'd need a new mechanism, but i'd certainly start looking at lubricating it from inside the door. I tend to use smething like a chain lub as it'll get into the workings and is reasonably 'sticky'.

may be worth adjusting the catch on the door frame, if lube does not work, maybe its set too tight and the door lock is not reaching it, or its just loose?

funny, my FL did that to me few days ago- when below zero- on a left hand bend doors swung open to first notch on door stay. I stopped and tried the outside handle a few times as it was stiff that morning.
Haven`t had a problem since..

Update, started off ok today - closes and opens as normal. Left to pop out for the food shopping (  :() - what a way to spend the sat morning. Half way there click.. door open, pulled up - wont stop closed now.

Compared to other lock on back - the grabbers (unsure of the correct term) which wrap around the hinge when the door closes - are loose - 'side ways wobble' - the other locks these are solid, if you click them closed (with the door open) and click then again (which I believe is the dead lock second lock - might be wrong).. If you then just move them with your finger - click... they open up - but the rest of the door thinks it’s still closed.

If you pull the release handle and watch the mechanics, there is a locking arm which drops down to release the grabbers? On the passenger side - this springs down ok, drivers - does next to nothing.

Have tried wd40 from the outside, not much good.

Took me an hour to get the thing closed, and with no garage it’s a pain. I'm enquiring on spares from the sales forum... but might have to visit VX  on Monday and get/order a part - as I cannot trust the door.

Will start striping down the door tomorrow and look from the inside.

thanks for the extra info chaps :y
