Whats the preferred code reader / resetter from ebay these days when a tech 2 is out of the question?? I seem to remember £30 one being mentioned previously.

for engine only, a generic obdii reader.  for most systems, cheapo tech2, but only if you have a proper com port. no pissing around with adapters, the chances of that working are slim.

Then around £500 are the "My Naff Code Reader" type ones - very good, but over priced.

Then around £1200 come in the good generic scanners, and the real Tech2 around £3.5k

Please nobody mention illegal copies.

Is this sort of thing an example of money in the bin?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GS500-OBD-II-2-Scanner-Code-Reader-All-OBD-2-Vehicles_W0QQitemZ290296333879QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment?hash=item290296333879&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14

I was thinking of picking up a cheaper one to read / reset the codes on my mig, but got attracted to the 'live data' features of this one.

GS500 is pretty good bit of kit, does Engine ECU reads, resets, limited live data, and is supposed to do limited gearbox stuff. I've had one about 9 months now and it has worked well.

I bought the first one off e-bay and it came with half the bits missing and a photocopied instruction book .. :( went back PDQ and got a full refund :(    Got the next one from

http://www.ecufix.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=206

but I see they are sold out :( .. came with all the bits and a printed instruction book.

Not sure which one you'll get from e-blay .. ripped off chinese reject or proper job .. if its the real deal it is worth it ... used mine twice in anger now .. thats £180 worth of VX fees ... so its already paid for itself twice !!

I have that device and am surprised that it only responds when plugged in to the vehicle.  I presume it takes 12V off the socket.
Will try to get round to writing an application for it sometime but scantools.net and EasyObdII both freebies and supplied with it, worked for me on the Focus and the Triumph (haven't tried the Omega yet as the battery isn't in it).

I am not sure I got EasyOBDII with mine. It is certainly not installed on my machine.   Maybe its on the cd (at home)
What does it do that scantools.net does not?

So would any of these devices be any good to tell me which airbag is kaput and my headlamp level problems. I know it's one of wishbone sensors but i don't know which one.
