DEPO or HELLA headlamps
« on: 10 March 2009, 11:10:12 »

I'm still contemplating buying a new pair of headlamps. I popped into my local parts shop yesterday to have a look at the original equipment ones, Hella. It seemed very plasticy and very lightweight and sort of wondered, can the ones made by DEPO in Taiwan be much worse.

Does anyone have any experience of the ones made by DEPO and whether they are OK to buy and install?

A new headlamp HELLA supplied by GM cost about GBP 300 here.  You can get both DEPO's for about 400 euros.

I have a Hella on the nearside & a Depo offside
Both the same approx weight
No problems light wise & can see no reason why Hella should be so costly

I have got the depo ones on my car. They cost me £75 each (staff sale) They seem to be ok I haven't had any problems with them.

I have Depo since last summer. Happy with them. I also use Philips +30 bulbs. Not bad at all, but cannot say if Hellas are any better. BTW, I payed appx 75 Euro each.

if Depo are what i have, dont know the name of the one i have but they are made in Taiwan, then there is no point paying the extra for hella originals. However the balast pack for hid lights didnt fit well, and when adjusted the the white plastic wheel broke on the adjuster within 2 turns. Also the beam shape adjuster was behind the low beam not the high beam cover meaning the whole light needs dismantling to change it to other side of the road driving, but they do both sides, and are not left or right handed like the originals which only give a flat beam for european driving.(and vice versa for european lights)

The beam on the road is better than the other original on my car, it also has a nice blue ish tinge to the edge of the beam pattern thats only obvious to the driver.

I have a new hella waiting to go on, so should be able to compare if i ever get round to fitting it.

Not sure on the headlamp units themselves but one thing I do know is that the Osram Nightbreakers I fitted yesterday are definately an improvement over standard H1's.  :y
