I cleaned up the IAC (again) and it hasn't improved things one jot.

The (automatic) car idles badly and stalls on a trailing throttle e.g. "coasting" downhill to a junction.

Here are the paperclip codes.
74, 135 and 73

From looking at the codes here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1160152415

it looks like the MAF sensor? is there anything else  I need to know or check please? can they be claened with carb cleaner?

Also is it likely to fail catastrophically (i.e. be undrivable) as i need to go out on a four mile round trip tomorrow or Tuesday

Is the connector to the MAF firmly attached. Does the cable show any signs of wear. Any air leaks. You could try delicately cleaning the sensor with brake or switch aerosol spray.

Cleaned MAF carefully with brake cleaner. No change. Still idles awfully and cuts out at low revs approaching roundabouts etc.

Can't see any problem with wiring but on a eleven year old I bet there are problems all over the place.

Paperclip tested and still codes 73 and 74. 135 has vanished despite being less than 20 clean starts!

Methinks it is time to buy a new MAF.

Disconnect the MAF....does this fix the stalling issue?

Just been out on a run to test the car with MAF and with it disconnected. Couldn't get it to "stall" either way.

 It did run better though without the MAF!! Obviously with the MAF disconnected it lit the EML.

I shall have to go on a longer test drive on Saturday..........

means your MAF measures wrong values and misinform your ECU ..

ps: I think also before changing MAF you must be sure there is no Air leak..

Right. Checked for air leaks. can't see any. Where might the obvious places be?

Have made a nice blanking plate for the EGR to cover both of the approx half inch holes. That is now bolted back in place with gasket goo. The EGR valve didn't look stuck. If you pressed the screw in the hole it moved in freely and then looked as though it was seated properly when it was released. There isn't anything in the other hole. If there should be then it was stuck fully open! Is that what it should look like?

The test drive. Full of hopes I went on yet another test drive. Lots of trailing throttle. It only stalled once and thought about it once. However it runs more freely and certainly revs more freely. Lot more responsive.

Not really sure where that leaves me. I have got a 1000 kilo load to move by trailer in a weeks time so I can always fall back on disconnecting the MAF to stop it stalling.

Any more suggestions or pointers gratefully received.!

i would say the MAF was faulty from what you have said above

if you are having to buy a new MAF then before buying one try cleaning it with alot of carb cleaner will either cure it or kill it, but if it kills it you havent lost anything!

maf breaked. Air leak would make the revs rise in my experience so dont think that applys. As said, cleaning is worth a go but not with carb cleaner, something mild, Mark has mentioned something like a foaming keyboard cleaner in the past, i cant remember the exact stuff but it was along those lines.
 The element on other Mafs is very brital so dont touch or prod it, although i have never even looked at a mig maf.

If it was me, spray with foaming cleaner, the idea being  to lift off any muck then gently blow off with an air line or similar. But chances are it will need a new/other one. Breakers?
