Some problems that need attention
« on: 23 March 2009, 20:31:58 »

Hi all
Just bought R reg Omega 2.5 TD CDX Auto Estate with the BMW engine. I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone here could answer.

1 Where on earth can I get a car maintance book from that covers the BMW engine.

2. I bought the car off my farther who had just had a job done on the steering. He then found he had a small leak of oil over the right hand side of the engine compartment. I have traced this to a small black device which should have 3 small pipes comming off it, only one is still attached. One of the pipes I found detached has a blue stripe on it and goes to what looks like a small flying saucer on the side of the engine the other detached pipe I have yet to trace where it comes from. Can anyone help?

3. The drivers door lock does not go all the way down when using the remote central locking. It also refuses to lift up 70% of the time when using the remote central locking.

4. The LCD display in the middle of the dash board id displaying broken text. Is this repairable or has the whole display got to be changed?

Thanks for any help.  :-/

leak is from the egr its very common and nothing to worry about really or strip off the inlet and clean the whole lot out!!
only choice in books is a bmw manual for the 525/325 etc but expensive!!
pixel missing is common and replacement is only option really look on parts for sale as they crop up quite often :y

Hi there!

1. Don't think there is one, however its the same engine fitted to the bmw 525 & 325 diesel and range rover TDsomething-or-other, so a fair amount of info available 'out there' (and here).

2. Sure this wasn't diesel...?  Little pipes & diesel would be the bleed-off/return pipes (?) which are a common source of leaks.

3. Remove door card (straightforward - have a go) and lubricate the pins & rods connecting all the lock/handle gubbins.  They've just gone stiff.

4. It is repairable, only really if you are handy with a soldering iron and taking electrical items apart...bit of a pain to get to though as it requires you to take the clocks out etc.  I find a 'technical tap' on the dash above the display is often enough to get it working again.  :y  There are some on here that could supply you with one but I think they are quite sought after.

Thanks for that guys i will source a manual now i know which one covers the engine. What about the rest of the car does the Omega petrol version cover it??

It is diesel. I will take a pic of the part that has the pipes detached and leaking. Perhaps this will help identify what it is and which way round the pipes go.

I am a electronic engineer so i am good with a soldering iron. Is the display easy to get out??

According to the Haynes website there isn't a manual for the BMW, Omega or Range Rover 2.5 diesel

As i said, a pain.  ::)  Once you've got it apart, it's the flexible connection that generally causes the pixels to go.  You need to carefully re-solder the joins (without damaging the fragile connector).  There is a good write up on the job available on the Omega Yahoo group, free to join.  :y

Root cause of the oil leak is the turbo.
This is common on the 2.5TDs, and really nothing to worry about. Best to remove the charge-air pipe (embossed 'Turbo Diesel') and thoroughly clean it out, and ensure the pipes are securely connected to the EGR valve.

Pixellated dash display - remove the clocks assembly, (look in 'Maintenance Guides' section), and note which colour multi-connector, and part number. Usually a few for sale on here.

Engine Manual - I've got some literature on the engine. Haynes book covers rest of car.
'PM' me your email address, and I'll see what I can send to you.
