Help with thermostat change
« on: 05 April 2009, 15:09:00 »

Decided to do the thermostat while I am doing the oil cooler.

Got the b**tard bolt out without too many problems but cannot free the transfer pipe from the thermostat housing.

Any tips????  :y

Keep wiggling and pulling the pipe, it will eventually start to move. Mine was a pain as well..

you will need to buy the transfer pipe if you've not got it already....

why...? because you will end up smashing the bar-steward off......!!!

i did got mine off using an old small wood chisel and carefully cracked away at the joint till it broke free....!!!

not the most technical approach....but it worked...

i tried to "wiggle" mine free for about 2 hours....!!!

once i smashed mine off and after inspecting it there was no way it was going to come off any other way...it was basically welded together with crap...

just be careful... block any holes that bits could drop into...

I find the best way is to get the transfer pipe loose before actually removing  :y

If you are replacing the thermostat housing, leave the tranfer pipe connected at the bastard bolt, put some mole grips on the thermostat housing and wiggle it just a little bit ;D it will come loose. To get the thermostat housing out you will then need to undo the bastard bolt and pull it out of the way.
Unless the transfer pipe is shafted you will be able to reuse but get new O rings :y
