should I drain gearbox and clean filter
« on: 09 April 2009, 23:24:17 »

This car is a nightmare, for those of you who have read my other threads, some cowboy attached gearbox breather to breather bridge, all this along with a list of other things have now been rectified by loo-knee and elite pete :y
When the breather was put right the car was still idling lumpy, then I got "AUTOMATIC GEARBOX"on display, was adviced and told how to top up gearbox(cheers Daz)when the gearbox was topped up with 1.5ltrs of dexron3 the lumpy idle went,Mark DTM did explain something about the torque convertor putting extra load on the engine due to it being low on fluid resulting in the lumpy idle. But the lumpy idle came back again yesterday so checked gearbox took another 300ml and the lumpy idle went, been out today and its back again. Before you ask no puddles of anything under car.I am now wondering if the oil that was in when it was low but masked by the breather been on the breather bridge will be olloxed,or is it that its got that low it may take several attempts to top it up or should I just drain it and change/clean filter(dont worry Daz got the haynes out lol ;D ;D).
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated thanks

I don't suppose there are any signs of ATF in the coolant? Just wondering if the fluid cooler in the radiator is leaking?

IME one go at filling an autobox normally works. As long as the engine is kept running throughout and the selector is cycled through each position it shouldn't be able to smallow another 300 ml.

I'd keep an eye on it for a few more days. I would say a fluid change will do no harm at all and is probably overdue. I would want to know the box doesn't have further issues before making the investment perhaps?

No ATF in coolant sure Loo-knee would of tasted that when he checked for anti-freeze :P lol on a serious note no.
Engine was kept running throughout, and selector cycled through.
Was with Daz on Tuesday,we drove round for about half hour after dis pack and leads were changed and car was changing as it should,Im confident if there was anything untoward Daz would of picked up on it :y

I'm sure you're right. :y

I would keep an eye on the level and check carefully for evidence of leaks for a while. If it settles down and behaves itself do a fluid and filter change.

Is the breather now supported up nice and high? Just wondering if fluid has been leaking out of it?

Just keep an eye on it......it may be that it had lost enough oil that it took a good fill befoe all the oil ways, torque converter and cooler etc were fully filled and hence the top up.

Thing is, we are used to a small top up or a full refill after a box cange and not the condition you have seen.

As for a full filter clean and oil change then well, it always advisable as its good practice.
