Managed to prise off the headlamp lenses without removing the entire ligh from the car. It had turned out that the heat has severly weakend the glue and the lens came off without too much difficulty.

Everyone was convinced that the crap on the lens was on the inside as it would not budge when I attempted to clean it whilst on the car. It turned out it was all on the outside.

After removing it, I tried using silver polish, rubbing compound, alloy wheel cleaner and nail polish remover but still it hasn't fully gone. It's like the dirt is embedded in the plastic and you would have to go quite far in to remove it. Even tried a bit of very fine sandpaper, lol. But it does look a lot whiter and al least you can make out the light components now, not like the diffused white mess I used to get previously. I'll do the other one next weekend.

The lense is mega thick so I would reallt go at it with soem 600 wet and dry and then some 1200 (wet) followed by a good compunding paste (i.e. G3 or if you must T-cut).

I am guessing they get damaged by the sand out there (we dont have the same issues here).

Headlight protectors might be worth considering once all cleaned.

Thanks for the reply. I was quite amazed myself at how deeply the opaqueness has penetrated the plastic. Never seen it in the UK that bad. With 45-50 deg C heat maybe its not surprising. It's certainly deteriorated that stick alien blood glue they use.

Thats all I use with my Machine Polisher. Takes ages (well 15 min per side), but works well.  

I will be taking it to the York meet, so if anyone wants to borrow it...

Got the same issue with one of my headlights ... I had it cleaned by a spare part shop - they used some 600 wet + 1200 wet and finally 2 different sorts of rubbing compound. now it's all gone and my headlight is clear - they charged my BD 1.2 for that

Had a go over the weekend, gave a good rub with some heavy sand paper followed by 1200 wet. Got all the dirt off, but you have to accept its not going to be crystal clear. But it is a damn sight better than before.

I had accepted that my fog lights would never be clear, but after using Autoglym super resin polish, and several hours of work (Done over a period of two weeks), I now have clear lights. Hope this helps
