Hi Guys

Looks like I need to change the pads on the miggy.  Is this something that can be attempted by an absolute novice or is it best left to the professionals

Easy mate.
This is a disc & pad change ...... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1171805208 but you get the ieda.
and here's the rears ....... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564750 you just need to buy a proper 3mm punch rather than the scabby old nail that MarksDTM uses!

Definately doable for a novice, make sure to spray all the dust away before you start undoing anything, aerosol brake cleaner aplenty!!

Front seem straightforward enough not so sure on the rear ones knowing my luck all those springs would fliy out and I'd be completely in the brown stuff

The rears are easier than the fronts. You just drive the two pins put, and the pads come straight out, you don't need to remove calipers or anything. The cross type spring is only to stop the pads from rattling around and is very diffe=icult to get in wrong. One the old pads are out, it's a case of gently pushing the pistons back into the caliper to create enough room for the new pads to go in. I posted a picture elsewhere of a new pad vs a pad that should have been eplace 100's of mile earlier   Gixerchris  ::)I like to put a dab of copperslip where the pads slide in the calipers.
They're easy ..... honest!    

You don't need to take the disc/drum off to do the brake pads! They only come off if you're servicing the handbrake.

My advice would be to pay the extra for a decent set of pads,i think cheaper pads are false economy,plus better pads give off less brake dust therefore dont muck up your wheels so much

It was when I saw the springs and actuating lever thats when I thought these wont go back in.  But thankfully I dont need to go this far to just change the pads.
