V6 Exhaust Manifold Gasket change.
« on: 14 May 2009, 15:57:59 »

I suspect that he near side exhaust manifold gasket is blowing on my 2.5 v6. It is emitting a 'ticking' sound, which gets louder under load, and gets quieter after the engine has warmed up.

How difficult a job is this to do? I have had a look in the Haynes manual and it looks like they make a meal of it, draining the oil and coolent etc.

The best word is fiddly. Get the swear box out.

Officially you need to remove the cylinder head to get to the gasket on that side.

In reality you can support the engine, remove a mount, and swing it over far enough out of the way to do the job.

It really helps if all the studs come out complete and don't stay in the head!

Ooops, Did I say near side? I meant off side! But thanks for the info anyway James. The Haynes does say to either remove the engine or take the head off for the near side.

I was hoping the job (which is the off side) would involve just unbolting any bits that are in the way, but it would seem i will have to drain the coolant and also the oil.

The car has just failed it's MOT, but not on emmisions, so I am wondering wether to just leave it for now.
