Brake test codes - Help!
« on: 24 June 2009, 22:28:06 »

Hi all,
further to previous posts I have made which needed error codes to progress, I have done my first pedal test which has given me this:-
. 0170
0173
0335
My car currently has problems with the following:-
- the engine emissions light is on with the car doing about 22mpg on a motorway 70mph run, not good.
- a mate with an Audi reader has told me that both lambda sensors are giving error codes so either both sensors are gone or maybe the cat itself(?) Can't remember exactly what he said the codes meant
- the car will start only when the engine is cold but will then run all day ( but sometimes cuts out on idle when heating up, will keep going if car is being driven) but if engine is turned off and left for 10 minutes it will not start again until it is completely cool again.
- Xenon headlights are not self-levelling. Computer says 'low beam fld/vision'

Can anyone tell me what the codes mean? Is there an index of the codes available on this site? :-[

Right, some of the big guns on here may correct me, so wait for them to confirm, but....

First thing to fix imho....
0335 is crank sensor. Fit a new genuine item only and route the cable away from the exhaust. Guide in maintenance.

Then run the car and see if the other codes go away. C sensor is known to throw other codes as well, and sometimes instead of from what ive read on here.

I would not change any other parts untill the crank sensor is replaced and tested, codes cleared and see what returns, suspect all will be well.

Why do Vaux like to confuse things?

p0170 is MAF on most vx engines. If it was MAF, that may explain all three codes.

You can always try disconnecting the maf and see if it runs better or worse (better, new MAF needed, worse, MAF should be ok).

OBDII codes are standardised, and p0170 is always a fuel trim malfunction AFAIK.  :-/

Now, a faulty MAF is one of the things than can cause a fuel trim malfunction, of course.

I think it's worth fixing the crank sensor issue first. If the ECU doesn't have a reliable indication of RPM, all sorts of things will go wrong. Besides, the crank sensor will pack up entirely at some point.

If you still have the fuel trim codes after the crank sensor is fixed it's time to think about other possibilities, of which the MAF is one assuming the simple things have been checked for such as intake air leaks.

Very unlikely to be Lambda sensors IMHO, as both banks are reporting the same error.

Thanks everyone, will change the crank sensor and see how I go. I checked for air leaks when I first got the lambda sensor codes, all ok.
Never changed one of these before, where is it and what's involved?
