The tie bar that restrains the door is jamming / sticking inside the door. Tried a squirt of wd40 but no help. I fear the door will get stuck in the half open position, it's that bad.

Anyone seen this and know the fix?

I take it you mean there is a loud crack when opening or closing the door and that it is stiff. If so it is the door that has cracked. I think there is a how to to repair the plate in the door. You can buy the kit from VX but I made my own. Not to bad a job but a bit fiddly to fit.

Thanks, found the repair in the maintenance section.

It's worse than noisy, the door is refusing to open and close properly, almost jamming in the mid-open position.

So what's happening -- is the strap mounting in the door damaged? Do the repair plates stabilise the mounting?

Yep, repair plates reinforce the check strap mounting by clamping the door section between two more substantial plates to spread the load.

Unsure of the sequence of failures that leads up to this. The plastic bush where the strap meets the bracket on the door pillar is prone to wearing and possibly the play shocks the mechanism inside the door until it jams. Once it becomes stiff it overstresses the mounting in the door. Alternatively perhaps the mounting fractures first and the door strap is no longer square to the door so it jams.

Anyway, I would get a new check strap and the repair kit (or just cut a couple of plates out of some metal and get some longer bolts) and replace the white plastic bush too.

Not a bad job, but fiddly at times, as said. Remove door card and then speaker to get access to the rear of the check strap and then 2 bolts to remove to get it out.

You might have a problem with the spring mechanism located inside the door from memory. I had this problem before I found this forum. I think a part had broken off.

In the maintenance guide it tells you how to get inside the door by removing the door card.

I bought a working Second hand part off a breaker on this forum

I have since used the VX repair kit with good effect on both sides. Money well spent.
