Strange Handling Problem !!
« on: 03 July 2009, 15:46:41 »

Had the car geometry checked and adjusted (4 wheel laser) by a company I have used over the past 20 years, watched what they did, very pleased with the out come, except I have noticed when braking the car moves to the right, then as I accelerate the car has a 'floaty' feel, then settles down again.
The movement is not violent like a brake snatch. :-/
Any ideas ??

Hmmm, interesting. Shortly after I had my geometry done at WIM I experienced the car moving to the right under fairly hard braking. When WIM were doing my geometry, Tony at WIM asked me if the car had a tendency to pull to the left while driving, which it did but only slightly. He said he could adjust the castor by moving the subframe slightly in order to correct it, so I told him to make the necessary adjustment. The car was much better after that and no longer had the slight pull to the left but then shortly after I noticed the movement to the right under braking. I can't be sure if the castor adjustment has caused the problem as I also have an issue with worn rear discs and pads which are being done next week. If it's still the same afterwards I might speak to WIM to find out if their adjustments might be the cause. :-/ I'm not sure quite what you mean by your car feeling "floaty" under acceleration, but I certainly have no issue's there.

The 'floaty' feel is accelerating just after braking only, it is as if something on the suspension is loose or worn ! (things seem tight). Funny the guy asked about how the car handled and it had a slight pull to the left, he said it would be adjusted out !!!

I would say your steering idler arm or a ball joint is knackerd. also check tyre pressure.

New 'steering idler' fitted in April for MOT, 32psi tyre pressure all round, but thanks for the post.

for braking : the brake caliper forces may not be equal..it can be measured..

floaty feeling during acceleration: may indicate a problem with steering still..

and just an opinion : measure the distance of all four tires from some fix points .. if they are not equal this can also be the reason..
