I seem to have a big oil leak ftom the gearbox I have not had much chance to look under the car carefully but there seems to be ATF all down the front of the box , any suggestions what could be leaking under there , The ATF is getting on to the exhaust and after a hard drive it was smoking pretty bady but driving like a grandad (which  I will be in a couple of weeks )  ;)it does not seem to smoke

Torque converter seal gone probably - remove round rubber bung from bottom of box and check for wetness inside bell housing - if wet confirms front seal gone.  Box out to change

Sorry but this is not strickly true oil in the bell housing can mean other things to.

Firstly if there is oil in the bellhousing the gearbox will need to come out to repare the leak.

the leak can be due to various reasons : 1, torque converter seal. 2, pump bush is worn. 3. bolt seals have gone.

these can all be diagnosed with the box off.
if its the torque converter seal the spring in side the seal will be slack and the seal distroted. the seal is about £30 to replace and is a bitch to do.

if its the pump bush you are looking for score marks on the torque converter shaft. the torque converter will not spin dead centre moving slightly letting ATF past the torque converter seal. this cost me @ £200 to fix. and i had removed the box for the specailist to just do the bush.

if its the bolt seals your better off getting a second hand gearbox cos its cheaper! trust me.....

Hope this helps and if you need any more advice please give me a shout. plus you need to check your level asap before you drive your car again other wise you will cause more damage to the box!

to add to my point above talking from previous experiance.....

a small amount of ATF will go along way when its spread accross the underside and back of your motor. 

mine used to do 50 to 100miles before the gearbox was slipping and it needed at least 2 2 1/2 bottles of ATF.

this is progressive and will only get worse, ATF is expensive even on a trade card i wouldnt put off getting it fixed.

you can take your motor to a gearbox specialist while the box is fitted and they will try to diagnos the leak but they will have to remove the box to confirm the leak. 2 years ago i was quoted @£200 to remove and fit the box ( this is without the cost of repare) i paid £50 ( i think) for them to diagnose that my box was tits.

bit of history: my box went tits when it was flooded with water this perised the seals and made the box unable to engage reverse. box needed replacing. got a second hand box from ebay and james helped me swap them over. the new box sprouted a leak removed the box again to replace the torque converter seal on replacing the torque converter seal the pump bush was found worn. box went back in due to me needed the car ( couldnt manage without it and i wanted to locate and get quote for fixing it.)

The box came back out a few weeks later and the GB specialist replaced the seal and fitted a brand new torque converter. the box went back in in record time thanks to the help from pat and kevin. oh and hubby supplied loads of tea and clod drinks, think there was even a bacon butty too. anyhow the Fault was fixed and all in all i had spent around £600/ £700.

Bugger  if it is leaking is it worth just sourcing a gearbox rather than trying to repair a 146000 mile one  :question

its up to you if its working ok then i would repair the leak. or you could spend on a second hand one and find it has issues down the line.

The mileage on the gearbox might seam high but if its been looked after it can go for a fair few more miles.

 I will need to do something soon I was going to be taking the caravan to Newent I dont want to have tio cancel that plus my daughter is due to have her bump in the next month so  I can see a few trips up to them coming up

You will need to establish whether its ATF or engine oil, first off.  If the latter, probable rear crankshaft seal, rather than the gearbox?

Its ATF From what I saw when looking with the car on the floor it appears to be dripping from some pipes infront of the gearbox

What gearbox would be fitted to my car then I know there is the AR35 and is it the AR25 ?
And nore importantly is there anyone out there that could do the work ,I am able to assist but I dont have the room to do anything big like this

AR25 was fitted to the 2.5 v6
AR35 was fitted to the 3.0 v6. you can fit either box to you car as they are both identical boxes with the ar35 being stronger to handle the extra power from the 3.0.

I have had  a look under there too day and I am now not sure if it is the gearbox all the oil appears to be from before the gearbox and has been blown backwards .
I have sprayed degreaser over it all and left it I need to wash it off and see if I can see where its leaking from whens its clean .
As I said it only did it after a high speed run
